More Dangerous and Less Wise  by daw the minstrel 86 Review(s)
Jay of LasgalenReviewed Chapter: 4 on 11/24/2008
I made the mistake of printing this to read at work, and burst out laughing at several places. Beliond and Maltanaur - what a team! 'Stubby was undoubtedly bruised and maybe even a bit broken, but he wasn't really what a Wood-elf thought of as hurt.' So that's all right, then ... :>)

Poor Beliond must have had a heart attack when Eilian fell among the wargs - and I must admit I had the same thought as Eilian when he lashed out blindly with the axe. OK, I knew he hadn't just killed Beliond, but it could have been a nasty moment.

This has been a wonderful story, Daw - I'm just sorry it had to end.

Author Reply: Thanks, Jay. You didn't mind the destruction of the dragon's egg? LOL. I was casting around for something dragon-associated but not a dragon because that would have been more than my guys can handle, and I saw the eggs and was inspired!

I hope your co-workers appreciated your being in such a good humor. :-)

That was so much fun, Daw, thanks for sharing it!

I enjoyed the glimpse of Oropher. I think Legolas and Eilian would have got along well with him!

Author Reply: Thanks, Naledi. I wanted to have some fun here, and the Wood-elves came through. I too like seeing Oropher. I think of him as a very charismatic figure. He walked into this woods full of strangers and they made him their king and then they followed him to Mordor. That's astonishing when you think of it. I'm sure Legolas and especially Eilian would have loved him. Thranduil would have had a heart attack at some of the thing Grandpa Oropher encouraged, I'm sure!

Ah, yes--the same story! Heh!

Glad they are being hospitable to these Dwarves, though.

Nicely told story. Enjoyed it immensely.

Author Reply: Glad you liked it, Larner. I figured in the end, Dwarves and Elves had become allies over the years. Not easy ones always (witness "The Hobbit), but still, they were both on the right side of the battle against Sauron.

Oh, dear--first of all we have this adolescent feud going between three young Dwarves and an equal number of Elves, all six of them spoiling for a fight, and now we have Thranduil and the Dwarf in the gorge! Ah, dear! Poor Dwarf! The trees down there will undoubtedly assist Thranduil on his way down and break his fall; but who will aid the poor young Dwarf?

Glad the branch broke beneath Thranduil and Kebur, actually, so the Dwarves' veracity can be ascertained.

And love Legolas laughing so much he wakes up his tree! Heh!

Author Reply: "Adolescent" is about right, or maybe just post-adolescent. They're sure acting like wild young guys anyway. I had to push myself to let them do it because I tend to be pretty repressed.

Legolas is enjoying the story no end, and the tree knew it. :-)

It must be terrible to be a Dwarf. They missed so much living in a flat world. Such a typical elvish pov and so funny.

Legolas and Eilian are really getting and earful about their father and their keepers. I will never look at those three the same way again, and I don't think Legolas and Eilian will either. Could Legolas, Annael and Turgon together be any worse?

Author Reply: Could Legolas, Annael and Turgon together be any worse?

IMHO, they weren't nearly as bad! LOL. But then, as Beliond later tells Eilian, they lived in a more dangerous world, whereas Beliond and Maltanaur had the good fortune to be young and wild in a healthy, safe woods. No wonder their spirits were high.

I liked that line about the flat world too. If you're used to moving up and down as well as horizontally, the world must look different, I think.

As always, a great tale. I really, really love your writings... they are always such fun - mixed in with a lot of 'message' - bless you and I pray you continue writing!

PS - loved the ending!

Author Reply: Thank you, Agape. You're very kind. I'm still writing, just not much fanfiction.

I figure Legolas and Eilian each promised not to tell their father or the other keeper, but they made no promises about not telling one another!

Oh my gosh! The Elves just had me in stitches the entire time - I loved the name calling - brilliant! And Fist Pounder! Still rolling on the floor - what a great chapter - now to find out about this fiery mess across the river....

Author Reply: I had to make up names for the Dwarves! I couldn't just keep calling them "the first Dwarf" and "the other Dwarf" and "no not that one, the other one." Sometimes the problems you run into in writing are just not predictable.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Agape.

very nicely done!!

Eilian and Beliond sure did find trouble, and Eilian with a ax, with the after thought of injuring Beliond. Love it...

Beliond, and maltanaur sure cause a lot of trouble in thier day as well, you have to feel sorry for the dwarves in a way, but not to bad. And Thranduil, he seems stuck between the two, you have to feel for his as he is hanging on the ledge and the two of them take a detour, it seems each time trouble happens Thranduil falls into something.

And of course, Legolas and Eilain will swap stories....

Author Reply: I was worried that the comic and serious tones in this story were clashing too much, but in the end, I was pleased with the way the thread of story about Dwarves kind of tied it together.

I couldn't let myself feel sorry for the Dwarves. I had to plan the trouble! If they're anything like the Wood-elves, they probably looked back on this years later and thought of it as "good times."

Glad you enjoyed it, pipinheart.

An interesting find and a fascinating tale of Dwarves and Elves and their misunderstandings! Heh! Now to hear the next part of the tale.

Author Reply: Glad you're enjoying it, Larner. I don't write humor very often so this was fun to do.

You could have warned me. I spooked the animals when I found out what the wargs were chowing down on.

Well, I think the boys all enjoyed their little wife-swapping exercise. I wonder if they'd change their minds about their brother's keeper and make it permanent? Nah, maybe not.

The flashback story was a hoot. You can kind of see where Thranduil owed some payback to his buddies in the form of babysitter duty LOL. But as riotously entertaining as this escapade was, my favorite part was near the end, when Beliond drops his guard with Eilian.

"Oropher was born to live among us. We would have followed him anywhere." Beliond's smile faded. "I suppose we did in the end."

Yeah, they did.

A great story, daw, and good to see you back here.

LOL. I needed something dragon related but not a dragon, because that would have been too much for me (and Eilian and Beliond) to deal with. I think Legolas might enjoy having Maltanaur as a keeper, but Eilian would definitely object! And so would Beliond and Maltanaur really. I figure they're each attached to their charge by now.

LOL. I hadn't thought of that. You'd think this episode would put him off of ever letting Maltanaur and Beliond near his sons. Of course, they've had thousands of years and a lot of experience to sober up. Because in the end, they did follow where Oropher led.
