Getting to Know You...  by Budgielover 19 Review(s)

"That was unfortunate"...", "you did that deliberately!", "You kicked me!", "Sad state of affairs when I have to be the voice of reason". The whole neighborhood can hear my guffaws coming from my computer room! This is hilarious. Poor Strider! This will be a long journey!

Author Reply: A VERY long journey, I fear, RS. I'm so glad you enjoyed this story. I'm enjoying planning them, keeping the theme of 'getting to know you.' We haven't quite got to the 'where strangers become friends' part yet ... and might not for a while. Poor, poor Aragorn!

Farmers especially seemed to regard Masters Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took with the same sense of fatality as they bemoaned the weather and swarms of locusts.

“Careful!” Merry ordered. “Are you all right, Pip?”

Aragorn thought Merry’s concern should rightfully be for him, for he felt a squirrel had been set loose upon him.

“Merry is afraid of heights,” Pippin whispered. “He won’t say so, but it’s true. Will you be very careful of him?”

This is so delightful. But poor Aragorn! I hope the hobbits realize that they must learn to be careful of HIM. He's doing his best, poor Man.

Author Reply: Oh, what a good point, Shirebound! I might have to deviate from the next story planned to focus on that. We know the hobbits can be very, very sweet ... but Aragorn probably hasn't formed a very flattering opinion of them, from what he's seen. Frodo falling off a table, Merry and Pip with their noses in mugs of ale, Sam glaring at him distrustfully ... yes, you are right. Aragorn needs some hobbit TLC.

Hehehehehe! I love it!

Frodo can be such a stuffed shirt! He really needs to loosen up a bit. LOL

“Won’t you take a bit of a rest?” Pippin asked as he turned back to the morass."
At least Pip showed Aragorn some consideration ;)

Well done, Budgie :)

Author Reply: You are right, Pearl - Frodo can indeed be pompous. That is very BookFrodo - in canon, he can be melodramatic and a drama queen. And still brave and sweet and caring and so filled with honor and goodness that we adore him. Of course, Aragorn might not at the moment. And might grow less fond of him in upcoming chapters... (giggle!)

This is absolutely hilarious. As if the circumstances of that journey were not dire enough already, you did have to throw a mud-puddle into their way :-) Aragorn's retort about Hobbit cannot helping the strange places they grew hair was absolutely priceless.

I love the gentle humour of your stories and was happy to wake up to an update.

Author Reply: Hi, Fliewatuet. Thank you for the compliment ... I love writing humor into these shorts (as opposed to the action/adventure/angst pieces) and am so pleased when it is appreciated. Thanks!

If only they knew how long... This is great. I just plain loved it all!

Author Reply: Hullo, Harrowcat! When I was thinking about this series, it occured to me that since it was an ongoing series of events, there was really no end to the 'learning process' or to the series. It will be fun to write the episodes as they come to me, instead of being fixed into a timeline. All the way from the Shire to Mordor and back ... Aragorn has no idea... *grins*

I doubt that Aragorn ever dreamed that his charge would be this difficult; and here Frodo was NOT making it easy. Poor man! Now, if I could get him here into a nice hot bath....

Author Reply: I sense your mind wandering there at the last sentence, Larner. Hummmm, yes, that does present a picture... *cough* What I meant to say was, I am certain that it was not smooth sailing, those miserable days traveling through the Wild before Weathertop. And four wet, hungry, unhappy hobbits would try the patience of a saint.

Just deliightful !Poor Aragorn caked in mud and those cheeky Hobbits !

Author Reply: Hi, Linda! I have to confess that this story was birthed from the look of annoyance on MovieAragorn's face as he led the Hobbits out of Bree. He had to be that aggravated for a reason. And if he wasn't before, he sure is now...

Well, this left me grinning. All that trouble, and they haven't even got to the Midgewater Marshes yet! What a wonderful series this is turning out to be.

Author Reply: Oh, Rabidsamfan, it's amazing that Aragorn didn't throw up his hands and desert. Of course, Gandalf would have been furious, and they are known for being 'quick to anger.' But a few more incidents like this, and our poor Ranger might consider it. Not to give any spoilers out, of course... *cough*

Poor Aragorn! This was so cute--I love it that Pippin was first and fearless, and that he confided in Aragorn about Merry's fear of heights. I was touched by Sam's concern for Bill, and I had to chuckle at Frodo's prickly pride. Really, I'm not surprised he ended up in a thorn-bush! This was just wonderful--I hope we don't have to wait long for the next installment!

Author Reply: I always thought that Pippin and Aragorn must have had a special relationship, and perhaps this first gesture of trust was part of that. As the youngest and smallest, Pippin would certainly look to Aragorn for protection, which he would receive, along with affection, for just those reasons. I'll try not to take so long with the next installment!
