Glorfindel's Folly  by Nilmandra 21 Review(s)
KarriReviewed Chapter: 1 on 2/22/2005
Oh, this is marvelous, Nilm. I just adore adore your Glorfindel, and he is always at his best when Erestor's around, too. Very entertaining! :-)

Author Reply: I am glad you like Glorfindel - he is too. He preens under all this attention. I am glad you found it entertaining - I fear writing comedy and humor is not my strong suit, but Glorfindel as uusual, saved the day.

That was funny. I could see the pudding mishap coming, but of course none of it gets on Elrond. I love Celebrian's method of Elrond-management - I can just see his whole family run rings round him. And now I have this fabulous mental image of Glorfindel standing naked (with a loin-cloth) in the fountain with a dove on his head.

Author Reply: Poor Elrond! I rather think he likes his wife managing him, and knows exactly what she is doing.

I do wish I knew an artist who could sketch that mental image (tastefully, of course) for me! Thanks for the review.

Yessss! Is this to be taken as an appetizer before HLIII? If so, it works wonders!! When I finished reading this, I went back and re-read the Epilogue of HLII, just to regain that beautiful glimpse of Elrond and Celebrian's relationship.
I enjoyed this piece very much. For one thing, the humour is taken very seriously, why, it is a MISSION!, it even has a code name ( OLE, congrat for the choice, it's great fun, even though we can safely say there were no bullfightings in Middle Earth, it suited this piece very well. OLE,OLE y OLE, as they say in the "Plaza" after a good "Faena")So that trick made it all more fun. Glorfindel's lethany "I was NOT naked" was fun too, and the result was hilarious.
But, above all, it had a "movie quality" to me, not sure how to put it, but I'll try to explain. You see, you've managed to divide the attention between the clumsy, funny mess and the endearing, soft and tender moment between Elrond and Celebrian. It seems as if a "second camera" were following them and they managed to steal away the whole scene, at least for me. I loved it, and that's what made me run and search for HLII epilogue. I suppose writing the tale of the third age is going to be hard for you, since you've managed to penetrate so deeply in their relationship.

Nice and lovely, and...waiting!!! ;-)

Author Reply: I am glad you liked it. Glorfindel is like you - in the midst of the disaster, he saw Elrond and Celebrian and was pleased and amused by them. I love that he is such an observant elf.

Glorfindel surely is fearless and full of joy...and OLE just seeemd to fit! I am working on HLIII - the outline, anyway, and you are right - the deeper I delve into Elrond and Celebrians' relationship, the harder those future scenes will be to write. But, I think they will be better for it too.

Thanks for the review!

Melancholy is unhealthy for Elves - I like that! But I'd have paid good money to see not-quite-naked Glorfindel, standing in the fountain, with a dove on his head. And what was that with a pink dress? We must have that story, too! I challenge you to write the pink dress story!

Author Reply: Glorfindel should have charged admission! But I am afraid that the twins are not quite remembering the pink dress incident entirely correctly. Their naneth did not help...she did it. It happened in History Lessons chapter 10, on their trip to the waterfall, but they did not learn who had done it until chapter 24. I'm afraid its rather epic and the story of the Glorfindel and Erestor follies are woven throughout several chapters. Thanks for the review!

I enjoyed this story very much, not least because it contained a (not) naked, wet Glorfindel. Wish I could have sketched him, too...

Author Reply: LOL! I would love to see some of those sketches, personally. :)

Love and joy and warmth just permeate this story. It feels like being curled up in a warm, fuzzy blanket in front of a fire. I have to say, first of all, that I cannot remember reading a better grabber for a story - naked ("I was NOT naked") Glorfindel posing in a fountain. Oh, yes, you had me from "hello." The twins' gleeful complicity and Celebrian's slightly more circumspect assistance only added to the delight. Glorfindel's genuine concern for his friend (and his willingness to suffer embarrassment for his sake) was heartwarming, and Erestor's loneliness at being the only member of his family left behind was poignant. I also found his rationale for staying quite intriguing - I have often wondered why Elves chose to stay when a life free of pain and strife was waiting for them on the other side of the sea. The humor and mischief were done just right - one of my favorite parts was this:

I agree!" agreed Glorfindel, laughing. "That is why I have enlisted the aid of two who are quite funny, usually when they do not intend to be."

The setting for the feast was lovely, and Cook's pride in his creation was so thoughtfully drawn and realistic. I think we all laughed with Erestor at the end. Lovely story, Nilmandra.

Author Reply: I am glad you laughed. Writing humor is hard, and I really hoped it would come across as natural humor, a funny event in everyday life. I love Glorfindel's kind heart, and I love Elrohir's questions. Cook took the destruction of his masterpiece pretty well, too. I bet he'll never ask a warrior to help again. :D

I was smiling happily up until I got to the part about the strawberry stuck on Elrohir's forehead, then I just whopped out loud! Glad I'm home alone.

What a delightful story. Life in Imladris is never dull. Even the statues are something 'delicious' to behold. What a wonderful snapshot of friends, family and the mischievous natures of certain elves. I'm still laughing....

Karen

Author Reply: It is fun to write something fun during this time of peace in Middle-earth. Glorfindel loves being the center of attention, including the butt of the joke! He really is a fun muse.

And I admit, I love Elrohir.

It was sad to see poor Erestor so downhearted, but very kind of Glorfindel to still want to cheer him up - despite standing naked in the fountain! (Oh, sorry, he wasn't naked, was he? I forgot!)

I'm glad he involved the twins as well - and I liked how you showed their closeness, and their distinct personalities at the same time.

I knew as soon as you introduced it that someone would drop the magnificent pudding, and make Erestor laugh! I wonder what the original plan was?

Jay

Author Reply: Glorfindel is being very coy about the original plan - won't tell me, as he says he may want to use it at a different time. He is really a little too self assured.

And I shouldn't laugh, but I love Elrohir. :D

Perfect. Although, Glorfindel might think he can control E2 now, but JUST WAIT.

And what a gorgeous Celebrian. I just love her method of Elrond-control. (I wonder if Galadriel has learned that it is easier to manage elves with honey?)

The adolescent twins are great - I hope you are thinking of writing more about them.

Author Reply: Celebrian is the light of Imladris. And, of course, I am setting things up for HL III (deep sigh).

Glad you like G and E2 - G is so self assured that he can laugh at himself harder than anyone...and I can't help but wonder why he included the twins. He knows that Elladan in particular is going to be thinking about follies all the time. Unless that is what Glorfindel wanted? :D

What a wonderful story! The OLE indeed. I presume that rhymes with what you say at a bull fight. And Glorfindel has no idea of the force he has just unleashed in involving the twins. Well done.

Author Reply: OLE! OLE gets to go down in the books as a successful mission, even if it was never carried out! And yeah...Glorfindel has no idea (or maybe he does) what can of worms he has opened by introducing the twins to follies.
