Very cute story!

She pulled back a little and looked pleadingly into his face. “But that is just why we should have a baby now. Think about it, my love! There can be no better way to defy the Shadow than to have a baby.”

That line is very familiar though, did you use that line before in one of your previous stories? I know I've read it before. Anyway, another job well done.

Author Reply: Oh you're so good! Yes, I had Thranduil remembering her saying that in "Legolas's Begetting Day." So when the time came to write this story, I had to have her say it!

Glad you liked it, Effigy.

This was lovely. I think Thranduil and Lorellin are so good together. Their deep love for each other is very evident. Too bad Legolas didn't get the chance to grow up with his naneth.

Author Reply: Thank you, White Wolf. I feel the same way about Lorellin. I think she was good for all of them and her loss was a tragedy.

Very beautiful! Lily

Author Reply: I find short things like this hard to write, actually. I kind of like a little large space to maneuver my characters in. But it's always fun to write about Thranduil and his queen.

This is a wonderful line: At the moment, he was not sure he could have protected himself or Lorellin from a chipmunk. Ah, the image evoked there!

I love the idea of Elves being able to know at once when they conceive, and you surrounded this delightful idea with a fine story. Terrific.

Author Reply: LOL. LACE says that elves put much strength and energy into begetting a child, so I figure Thranduil is worn out by his efforts. :-)

Excellent, daw! It is amazing how many different way this has been spun so far. I enjoyed the glimpse of Legolas's begetting. Very sweet!

Author Reply: It is interesting to see the different stories, although as I said to Jay, so far everyone has spun it toward Thranduil's family. I'm interested to see if anyone gives us a letter from Elrond or the master of Esgaroth. I suppose those situations would tend to call for a longer story.

Wow, Daw. This was quite a change of pace after "Brother's Keeper." So sensual and poetic, so intimate. I loved Thranduil's private communion with the trees, the visual image of Lorellin bathed in light, her resolve quenching his indecision, their amusement at eluding Ithilden's babysitters. It was all wonderful.

Author Reply: You do know whose fault this story is, don't you? Well, of course, Jay set the challenge and I'm happy to honor the Mirkwood Castle Yahoo site, which is going off line, but Karen asked to know what happened when Lorellin led Thranduil into the woods and "had her way." I left that a little vague, I have to admit. :-)

I have trouble being 'poetic,' so I'm glad this worked. My only salvation is to keep it as simple as possible.

So Legolas is begotten...

The stories you write containing Lorellin are always a special treat because they give us a different insight into Thranduil than we regularly see. It is easy to forget that he was a husband and lover alongside the other roles he so capably fills as warrior, king, and father. Of course, we who have long kept company with your tales know Lorellin's eventual fate and the ripple effect that has in the lives of those surviving her. I think that is why when Lorellin makes her rare appearances in a few of your stories that we are so greedy to grab at and absorb all that we can about her because of all that Thranduil becomes when he is with her that is often tucks away for moments of private reflection or grief. It strikes me that I would have loved this dear lady as deeply and reverently as the others whose lives she graced for so short a time.

This piece was a little bitter, a lot sweet, and altogether delicious! Well done.

Author Reply: I always think that Thranduil would be more relaxed and playful around his wife. I'll bet there were moments when the whole family laughed and teased together and that those moments got rarer after she died. I think of her as doting on her family. I hope you would have loved her, Brenda. Thank you for your kind words.

So this was really Legolas's begetting day, was it? I like the way Lorellin 'had her way' with Thranduil - and the forest is the right place for the conception of a wood-elfling.

I'm amazed at the totally different stories that have been written so far as a result of this challenge!

Jay

Author Reply: They are different, but so far, we all seem to have zeroed in on Thranduil's family. I thought that was interesting actually. We'll see if anyone produces a letter from Elrond or something.

This is a beautiful story, daw. I love the implication of spicy humour in the letter and on the mind of it's writer when all is revealed.

Author Reply: Thank you, jenolas. I amused myself by having Ithilden ask Thranduil if he was going for his 'afternoon ride.' :-)

This was cute and fluffy in a good way, and also very Elf-y. Perfectly Wood-elfy. I love the way you write wood-elf romance. It seems so natural and yet very beautiful, as it should be for Elves. It also humanizes Thranduil nicely--king or no, he's a wood-elf, and isn't above a little play in the woods.

Author Reply: I think all of Thranduil's sons were conceived in the woods. For Ithilden, it was moonlit night (hence his name - 'ithil' meaning moon); for Eilian, it was raining ('eilian' means rainbow). And we see Legolas's beginning on a sunny, leafy day. Imho, elves do it in the woods. :-)
