A Small and Passing Thing  by Lindelea 5 Review(s)

Your Frodo is more chipper than mine, while your Freddy's the haunted one. Love the "bedtime stories."

I love the idea of Bilbo telling Frodo bedtime stories! :)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

I like this story! I often like your stories, although sometimes they get overly long and drawn out. Also, I want you to write the story of Bilbo and the bedtime stories! That would make a very amusing tale!

So, this story is going to go all the way to the Havens - that's quite a period of time to cover! I'm going to have to re-read the relevant chapters in the other stories to call back to mind what you've done already with this time.

Merry is coming into his own now that he's returned home. He's got both Frodo and Sam to jab at, and he seems thoroughly comfortable with his role. I can see where the picture of the dashing young Travellers, with their finery and parties, is coming into view. Pippin just needs to be drawn out of his funk. Coming home doesn't seem to spark him quite the same way. I would guess there's quite a confusion of emotions in his young mind. Relief at surviving the war and being home at last, determination to finish the job of driving out the ruffians, tremendous anger at what has been done to the hobbits and probably a bit of guilt that he couldn't prevent it, some impatience at the provincial attitude that remains in many inhabitants of the Shire, resentment of his welcome, or lack thereof, by his family, and probably some sadness because you can't really ever come home and have things the way they were before. He most likely feels like he doesn't belong anywhere. We know it's going to take quite a bit of time before he straightens himself out.

Frodo's started Freddy on the road to recovery, but he's right to tell his father how they must help Freddy fight against the darkness. It's not quite the same as the Black Breath and there's no anniversary to worry about, but he has been deeply scarred and he's going to have to fight to recover. Frodo's still trying to walk the tightrope, wanting to give the hobbits the understanding of the horror so narrowly escaped while keeping them firmly grounded in the good. It's a tough act.

I love Merry's courtship of Rose Cotton! A little more pronounced here then in your other stories, lovely! I'm looking forward to finding out more about Freddy, poor guy. Are we going to get to see him happy at home again? Looking forward to more, thank you!
