And time halted. Dreadful cliffhanger. I know how the story ends, but still I'm sitting here at the edge of my seat to see how you will tie this all together.

Author Reply: It won't be much longer until you'll find out! =) K.G.

Author Reply: I'm so glad to hear that--that's just the kind of reaction a writer wants for a cliffie! DF

Yes, at that moment all would stand still to learn the fate of the Ring, and by extension, their own fates as well. Too bad Boromir was so fatalistic. He should have had more faith, having found himself beside the King Returning and having seen Frodo's basic strength of will.

Author Reply: Yeah, no kidding! Fortunately, because Boromir survived to continue the Quest, he will find all of that out for himself. K.G.

Author Reply: Yes, our Boromir will have learned the lesson and lived to apply it. DF

Hah. This ought to make our beloved Dreamflower laugh. When I brought up SoA this morning, the quote of the day at the top of the page was ‘Comfort me not with wizards!’ said Denethor.

...which my dyslexia rendered as ‘Comfort me not with wizards!’ said Dreamflower.

And now I can just hear her saying that, and laughing.

Author Reply: Too bad that had not really been Denethor's mindset, huh? LOL! Things would have gone so much better if it had been. K.G.

Author Reply: That did make me laugh! DF

What a dreadful and oppressive day for all of them. Poor Merry, there were so many times during the Quest that he must have felt abandoned and alone.

Author Reply: Yeah, no kidding! It was so rough on them all. K.G.

Author Reply: Poor Merry, it's true. He did feel abandoned so many times in his life. DF

Yes, all is coming to a head as the world stops and waits for the ring to drop into the fire. Sounds like everyone we want to survive will do so.

Author Reply: Yeah, it does, doesn't it? Those of who have read the book know how it ends. K.G.

(Yes, I've used the concepts, although not the actual word "duenna". I have consistently written my hobbits as quite old-fashioned. LOL! Must be the influence of all the old books we read over the years. Louisa May Alcott, The Five Little Peppers, Jane Austen, etc. etc. etc.)

Author Reply: Yeah, I reckon! =) I've read those books and those authors myself, so I know what you mean. K.G.

He had to stand on tiptoe to wash his face; if it were not for the extra height granted him by Treebeard, he would never be able to reach it. This is the kind of detail that brings writing to life.

I've been wondering how you would handle this particular moment in time. Well done! (The repetition of
"Time halted" is especially effective.)

Ha. I have also used the concept of "duenna" in my Shire stories...

Author Reply: You have, huh? =)

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. K.G.

Author Reply: I'm glad you liked the little touches. We just try to put ourselves behind Merry's eyes.

"Time halted" was good enough for JRRT, it was good enough for us!

I know you have, and you know I have as well (Pearl got a workout in "A New Reckoning"!) DF
