Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 14 Review(s)
FV_WhisperReviewed Chapter: 105 on 1/7/2015
Hmm, Elves in business suits. Now that's a nice mental image!

Ah, Finrod the Elf guide!
It's a good thing they did away with all jewels and swords, some people of Wiseman who are not that happy with the Elves might get the idea when they will find out there's royalty in town.

It's fun seeing the ap Hywels here, they seemed out of place with the royals earlier on, now they are actually the ones who are most at easy in this world.
Gareth is thinking a bit to easy about grown up daughters here. Just wait until he and Nell get on elf their own!

I get the idea Iseult, being a teacher herself, is enjoying the tour of the campus.

The firetruck incident was hilarious: the guards in a state, Galadriel and Celebrían being send to 'protection', much against their wills, Turgon half in a flashback...

And if you've had everything, there's a 4 year old calling them silly Elves lol! Well, as they say here, little children and drunk men speak the truth...

Turgon is definitely having a thing with Glorfindel here and seeing how his thoughts are with Eärendil all the time and his reaction on the little boy, I think he must have been a dotting grandfather.

Author Reply: The ap Hywels, even Tristan and Iseult, are more familiar with Western culture than they are with elvish ones, and of course they are very integrated into our world. I think Iseult enjoyed visiting the campus.

I'm glad you found the firetruck incident amusing. I though it quite funny with some people panicking and others not and poor Finrod trying to calm everyone down.

I think Turgon was a very doting grandfather and somewhere I have Glorfindel remember the warm relationship between Turgon and Eärendil when the latter was a boy.

Thanks for commenting, FV_Whisper. I appreciate it very much.

It was to be just a simple sight seeing tour, but I sensed trouble the moment the kings showed up in all their jewels and with guards with swords. Oh, my talk about culture shock. Luckily they left the swords at home or there would have been a major incident with panicking elves. Finrod should have taken a few more Wiseman elves with him on this tour. The little boy summed it up quite nicely: "Silly elfs". I just noticed while I was quoting the little boy that you used the form "elfs" Is there a reason you used the form "elfs" and not "elves"? The boy obviously knew elves when he saw them.

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. Yes, Finrod should have taken a few Wiseman Elves with him and it is a good thing the guards did not have their swords with them or there would've been real trouble. The boy says "elfs" because he is at the stage of his language acquisition where he knows that the plural is 's' but he has not yet learned the exceptions or the permutations. He'll need to be a little older (school-age) before he learns that the correct plural of 'elf' is 'elves' and not 'elfs'. I hope that clears it up for you. Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I appreciate it very much.

Hm, been a while since my last review, been kind of busy, Christmas, New Year etc.

So, let's see what has been happening, I am with Olorin with regard to the mass arrival of all the kings of Aman, I hope the Maia are on their toes with their non interference! Loren is right, they are a very tempting target for the Dark Ones in our midst, it would not take long to pull together some thing nasty, a single brick of C4 dumped in the middle of them would make a mess it would take Namo Yeni to sort out!

Just how many came, I make it to be at least ten named, plus at least five more
guards, plus who knows how many support staff? Trying to remember how many came on Vingilot the last time. At least five will be staying, Elrond, Calibrian, Dar, Cani and Amarie for starters.

Elrond seems to have enjoyed himself and made himself useful in the after math of the accident, his sons have grown and changed in the many years since he last saw them, he is right to be very proud of them.

Nell, fathers are fathers, no matter how old you are and how old you get, you will still be their baby girl to be loved and guided. I wonder just what Galdrial's thoughts are on the matter!

Oh, Alex, boy the things you have had to do. Cleaning up somebody else's mess is no fun, if the Russians knew what Iliyavitch was doing why didn't they take care of him them selves, or was he too powerfull or too good at what he did?
I am glad Amroth and Ron were able to help him. Poor Derek, some how bran flakes and a bagel just don't seem adequate compensation for cracked ribs and a bruised lip, Alex you owe him big time!

As for the tour, it might have been better with a smaller group or a few Ennorath Elves along to help keep things under control. Poor Serener, no falling on your sword is not an option, besides Namo would send you back double quick with a flea in your ear for doing some thing so stupid!( you would have thought that in all this time Elves would have come up with some un armed self defense moves, but then thinking about it the only Elves we have seen use them are Ennorath Elves, Gil and Ron.)

Silly Elfs indeed, is Finrod mad at him self or the others?

One more thought, I don't see where Peterson can call them God Less, if any thing they have a closer connection to God than many, since some of them work with Angels and Arch Angels on a daily basis, just how much interaction has Peterson had with the Elves any way, 'know thy enemy'?

Long review but I think I am caught up.

Happy New Year,

Lynda

Author Reply: Hi Lynda. A busy time for most. With support personnel and all, I think about 30 people came altogether.

I think the Russians were afraid of Ilyvitch. He was too powerful and too far up in the government, which is why they refused to do anything about him and that's why Alex was sent. I doubt the Russians were happy about that but hey! that's what happens when you refuse to clean house yourself. Someone else ends up doing it for you.

The Elves had no real reason to develop unarmed defense, not in the stylized forms we know today. I'm sure every warrior learned a few tricks in case they were without a weapon but nothing systematic. Obviously, those Elves who remained in Middle-earth learned the martial arts alongside Mortals so they have skill the Elves from Valinor do not have.

Finrod is angry at both himself for thinking he could handle any situation that came along and at the others for not listening to him and realizing that there was nothing to fear because none of the Mortals exhibited fear.

I doubt Peterson is the type to interact with Elves too much and if asked about angels and archangels would most likely quote the maxim about how even Satan can appear as a being of light, blah, blah, blah. Some people seem to revel in their self-delusions instead of dealing with the truth.

And now we're both caught up. Happy New Year.

An enbarrassing incident for the Amanians. I empathise with Finrod.

Author Reply: Yes, very embarrassing, Larner. Poor Finrod, but I think he's forgotten what it was like when he first arrived in Wiseman. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Abit of fun: Somehow the guests' reactions to modern fashions (an a bit the Mortals' comments about sneaking out for a a night of fun on the town) reminded me of this song. A bit non-PC. ;-)

Seems this modern world is not to everyone's taste. Especially that of the guards'! ;-)

I suppose we should be relieved that the Elves are visiting at a time when the temperatures are still fairly cool. this being Alaska and all. If they had been presented with what some people like to wear in the summer I'm sure they would have been horrified. And the Valinoreans really aren't ready to see a bikini yet - if ever.

Tee-hee. I loved that little kid! There's nothing like a young child to embarrass anyone in the vicinity. Silly Elfs indeed! ;-) And the newcomers were (perhaps predictably) thunderstruck since they haven't actually seen a child in thousands of years. Which reminds me - have Amroth and Nimrodel told the visitors about their personal population explosion yet? I guess they immediately knew she was pregnant, but do they know there are _three_ in there?

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. This world does take getting used to. And children, especially the very young ones, are very good at embarrassing the adults in the vicinity. The newcomers were very thunderstruck at the sight of the child, especially when that child appeared not to be in awe of them. *grin*

Actually, they do know about the pregnancy and I suspect they've also been told that Amroth and Nimrodel are expecting triplets. That would've been a topic of conversation among them before Glorfindel, Finrod and the ap Hywels showed up.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Government spies who assassinate targets but who also have met Atar, three piece business suits, teenagers who are not impolite per set, but who don't feel the need to give bows to their elders, bikinis, wailing sirens - you are certainly showing the readers all the things that the new Elves are having to assimilate as they tour Wiseman. If this is a small town how would they handle being in Los Angeles or New York? I am beginning to see the logistical nightmare that is facing any Elf who will be fighting the Last Battle in Middle-Earth. Learning the language, dealing with the customs and mores of mortals would give anyone a headache.

I think though everyone wanted to come on this tour, it might have worked better to have had smaller groups of Elves and space them out so that they could see what is available but not large enough that they overwhelm the sidewalks and stand out among the mortals. You did have me chuckling in some places during this chapter, especially when Galadriel is complaining about Nellium living in a dorm and the ap Hywel brothers asking about how old one has to be to cross the street. The four year old kid basically pointed that the elves were pretty silly. But I am not sure why Finrod ended up being so angry. Hopefully things will work out as the tour continues. And is Olrion going to show himself at some time?

I am looking forward to continuing the tour. I hope you have a great week. Also, Happy New Year!

Author Reply: Hi Rikki. Yes, there's a lot for them to assimilate and you're right that it probably would've been better (though not quite as much fun for the reader) if they had toured in smaller groups. I'm glad you found much humor in the chapter. We'll actually see Olórin in the next chapter, though he won't be showing himself exactly.

Thanks for reviewing and Happy New Year to you, too.

"Silly Elfs", indeed! How the mighty have fallen! ;)
The ap Hywels have adapted to the presence of royalty quite nicely - being more at home in our world apparently helped.
Finrod is very brave to take the visitors to town all on his own, but perhaps having at least one or two Wiseman Elf with them would have been wiser.
Looking forward to further excitement.

Author Reply: Hi Soledad. Yeah, that's for sure. Poor Elfs. LOL!

The ap Hywels have long ceased to be in awe of anyone, I think, and of course, being more at home in our world does help in that respect.

You're right about Finrod. It probably would've been better if he'd asked a couple of other Wiseman Elves to come with them on the tour. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. He'll know better next time if there is a next time.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Whew. I thought that Turgon was entering a memory, and it would be a while before they could bring him back.
~Eruherdiriel

Author Reply: Well he was sort of reliving his last moments in Gondolin, but luckily he was able to pull himself out of it. The little boy probably helped. Thanks for reviewing Eruherdiriel. I appreciate it.

I think maybe a stop by the local fire station needs to be part of the grand tour, now. :P

If Turgon had a panic attack/flashback over a fire truck, I'm rather worried about what might happen if he sees an airplane. Well, worried and sadistically curious. The whole scene had me giggling, what with the guards running about like a bunch of confused mother hens...or no, more like button quail. They're even more flighty and panicky, LOL!

Plus Finrod just getting more and more frustrated, and the little boy being completely nonchalant about it...you just have to put your hands over your face, shake your head, and laugh. Can't help but wonder if that's what Olórin was doing.

The poor things, though. Weaponless, armorless, trying to guard their royalty in a completely strange place (for some of them, at least). I can see how it'd turn into such a mess so quickly, particularly given their attitudes. Quite realistic portrayal of how it such a thing might go down, or at least I think so!

You know what, I hadn't made that connection about Alex and Beren being similar in having died and come back. Interesting.

Elves in suits. Why thank you, Fiondil, for that lovely image to carry me through the day. *grin*

I'm looking forward to seeing how Nick copes with having a flood of Elven royalty descend on his store, and what the others – particularly Elrond – must think of the easy availability of books. Imagining trying to explain Kindles to them makes my head hurt.

I do hope you had a peaceful Christmas! Thanks for the great chapter. Eagerly awaiting Friday's update, too.

-Kevana

Author Reply: You're probably right about that, Kevana. A stop at the fire station is in order, though we will not see it here. It is pretty funny 'seeing' them all panicking like that, though. We are a sadistic bunch, aren't we? LOL! Anyway, hopefully the rest of the tour will not be quite so exciting.

And you're welcome on the image of Elves in suits. Enjoy!

We'll see Nick in the next chapter and yes, trying to explain kindles and nooks and the like would be a headache.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.
