Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 27 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 93 on 11/26/2014
Even after decades of experience, long drives make me tired, so it must be much worse for Finrod, who has nearly no practice yet and has to concentrate on stuff we would do in our sleep, so to speak.

You know, I've read a lot of books about archaeology over the decades and was just thinking how they were struggling to find any details and answer so many questions even about cultures that got lost just a few hundred years ago. And then there are the Elves who saw the cultures get lost during the last ice age and to reawaken over time. If they wanted to, they could probably answer a good number of questions the scientists have. I can just picture the uproar and excitement if they'd do that – though it is clear they will not do it. But it's mind-boggling to think that they could answer so many questions because they have lived through all these earlier times. Not to mention knowing cultures we can't even discover any more because there is nothing left. Sometimes it's hard to wrap my mind around what it means to be immortal.

Poor Gareth, he's so nervous, and understandable so.

Tristan and Iseult are quite the contrast in appearance, though Tristan's shirt made me snicker. And then I had to think about the time when the son of my cousin lived with my aunt for a while. Auntie is as prim and proper as Iseult and loves elegant clothing, and her grandson at that time was into goth style, all black, blonde hair coloured black and blue, rings in nose and ear and a chain from nose to ear. Can you imagine these two together? Even worse than the ap Hywel parents!

Now that was unexpected, Tristand and Iseult questioning the identity of the other Elves. It really doesn't make much sense; as the others said, the Mortals wouldn't care any way, as they don't know these old legends, so claiming wrong identities wasn't necessary. And they had these identities long before they meth Gwyn and Gareth, so it couldn't be just to impress the two.

The ap Hywels didn't know about Glorfindel being in Imladris, and maybe not even about Elrond? Strange. Either they are way too young to remember these times and only know them from legends, too, or they have lived pretty secluded. Or both.

*shakes head* While I think it would be wise to not believe everything and question some things, I get the feeling the ap Hywel parents are overdoing it in that regard. And it's an easy way out to demand proof, because they know perfectly well that they can't give any. No one gave out birth certificates back at Cuiviénen!

You rang? and I get that reaction a lot? ROFL – that was so very like Námo! Oh, I had half expected for at least a Maia, if not a Vala to turn up after that, but that was just too hilarious! Our dear Lord of Mandos has a flair for the dramatic and theatralic, doesn't he?

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Well, there was a time when Barahir was into archeology, before moving to Wiseman. It must've been amusing for him to listen to all the theories put forth about ancient cultures and he would have to bite his lips to keep from laughing at how wrong they were. Unfortunately, it would've been far too dangerous for him to reveal what he knew about the past, so he just kept quite, pretending to offer a different viewpoint for the sake of argument. I suspect that often his 'theories' were shot down by the 'experts'.

Anyway, the ap Hywels have lived away from elven society for so long that they are naturally suspicious to have them suddenly pop up out of nowhere (literally and geographically speaking). At any rate, I think Námo cured them of that in a big way. *grin*

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Atya,

Tristan ap Hywel should try ordering from Loot Crate. That is, if he moves to Wiseman permanently, since I can't remember if they go internationally other than Canada. (I get the feeling he would ADORE the Ninja/Pirate t-shirt I received in my box yesterday!!) But he would absolutely adore it. And Iseult, from what I can see, would probably whinge about it. *snickers* Tristan is such a geek, but that just makes him awesome. ^_^

Iseult would get along well with my mother, who is, after all, at least partially Jewish and very much acts the part. Heh! So, they don't believe that Glorfindel, Finrod and Daeron are who they say they are. Letter of introduction? Let's have Lord Namo turn up instead.

"I get that reaction a lot." Ha! Yeah, especially when he makes people walk his maze, so at least they didn't have to do that!

And, of course, "You rang?" Which I heard in Lurch voice, which is not at all how I usually hear Namo, so that was priceless!

*Giggles*

Kaylee

Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. Tristan is indeed a geek and awesome. Iseult whinges a lot but she loves him and that's all that matters. And Námo is his usual irrepressible self. *grin* Thanks for reviewing. It's appreciated.

LOL! This chapter was great. I had to laugh at the Neutrino joke and wisely put my coffee away before Namo showed up. Sitting in bed with a cup of hot coffee reading this chapter is hazardous. Poor Tristan, Namo was not what he expected, but he just invited him, and Namo is not someone to ignore such an opening. Be careful what you wish for.
Iseult is such a contrast to Tristan. I know a couple that is similar. She is always dressed to the nines, very stylish and elegant, and he looks more like a hobbit in dress and manner. Seems like opposites are attractive.
Now Namo has to convince both about the identities of the Wiseman elves.

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. Now you're the first to mention the neutrino joke. Thanks for mentioning it. Tristan and Iseult have a lot to get their respective heads around, no doubt about it. And I thought it fun to have them be so contrastive in style and manner. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Wow,rude elves to other elves. I understand it is like meeting a fictional character and they think this is a con; but again wow. Rude much? I have a feeling good ol' Nate will be getting this all straight and right with them tho. And maybe the over protecting role will be replaced with a much nicer one? :)

Author Reply: Hi Laer. Well, they are suspicious of the truth. You can't really blame them. We'll see how Nate handles them. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

Yes. Just...yes. I loved it. Short and sweet, but...hilarious. Especially Tristen fainting at Námo's feet. Looking forward to tomorrow's chapter!

Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter, Tira. Hopefully the next chapter will be just as entertaining for you. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it very much.

Ah, dear--I would believe; Lord, let Thou help me in my misbelief! I can see it now! And having recently read about Einstein and his views on cosmology, this chapter and Tris's responses hit delightfully close to home. Love it. And trust Namo to drop in on Atto's directive. Heh!

Author Reply: Yes, that pretty much sums it up, Larner. And since Tristan knew and admired Einstein, it stands to reason that he would have similar views on cosmology. As for Námo... you gotta love him! LOL! Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's much appreciated.

*sigh* If I had any ability to write fanfic, I think I would. As it is, I can only try to give ideas to more talented people.

Author Reply: And it is a very intriguing idea, but unfortunately, all my energies are tied up with Elf Academy 4 and I can't think of anything else right now or for the foreseeable future. And there are other projects that I hope I can get to after I finish with Elf Academy. I have a whole list and it keeps getting longer. *sigh*

@someone- it's hard to reply to somebody named "someone" without sounding like I have no idea who I'm talking to ;). Anyway, that sounds like a great idea for a short story- Feanor is reembodied, hears what mortals have been up to with physics lately, gets his hands on a particle accelerator. (Presumably nobody gets much sleep.)(The Quanta Silmarillion?) *slips a carrot into the Vaire's Loom plot bunny hutch*

Author Reply: Well, Sasha, you're more than welcome to write this story yourself. I have too much else I am doing right now. It's an interesting idea, but I have neither the time nor the inclination to do anything with it. Sorry.

Oh Dear. Poor Tristan. Namo seems to have a fondness for the overly-dramatic. Well, all the Valar do, actually.

Still no backstory. Kinda disappointed about that. I was super excited to read that when the email showed up in my inbox.
~Eruherdiriel

Author Reply: Sorry, Eruherdiriel. I promise that we will learn something of their history in the next chapter. Please be patient.

I knew I was going to love Tristan from the very first description of him. And I was not wrong! He knew Albert and Max, I would pick his brain with a fine-toothed comb. Now if there could just be an Elf who knew Tesla and his rumored giant death beam...

What a pair, they seem so mismatched, I would love to know how they met. Iseult is a trip. She seems like the kind of person who goes around adopting and "rehabilitating" people who are not up to snuff, in her opinion. *grin* I can just imagine what it would be like to have her unleashed on Wiseman. Or rather, what it's going to be like when Gareth and Nell get married and she comes in for the wedding, heh!

I wonder why she was nervous though, lots of nerves going around and nobody talking about why. Very curious.

Science joke t-shirts are the best t-shirts, except for video game shirts, or at least it's a close tie.

You know, their doubt is understandable, but more than that it makes me wonder if they have had reason to doubt such things before. Maybe they had given up hope of meeting any other Elves and now are having a hard time coming to grips with it, especially given who these Elves are claiming to be.

*pffft* Sometimes I suspect Námo keeps an ear out for openings like that just for the chance to pop in and say hello. They did say Eru but I suppose Death Himself have to do as Atar is all out of burning bushes at the moment. (I kid, I kid. XD )

There are some mysteries here surrounding this little family, I am curious about why Tristan has hazel eyes, I didn't know that was rare in Elves. I learn something new every time I read one of your stories.

Lots of warm thoughts for the cold and stormy week ahead!
-Kevana

Author Reply: Tristan is a hoot and Iseult isn't that bad once you get to know her. I love how mismatched them seem and yet it's obvious that they love one another deeply. Tristan's wink says it all, IMO.

There are plenty of mysteries about this little family and some of them we will learn about over the course of this and the next story.

And what can I say? Námo is... Námo. LOL!

Thanks for leaving a review, Kevana. I very much appreciate it.
