Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 18 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 80 on 11/14/2014
I am glad they in the end didn't care for the opinion of the Valinórean Elves, and I loved it that Glorfindel put his foot down and Finrod defered to him. And the dig at Legolas of Gondolin about only knowing him for two months; it's what I was thinking – they have known their mortal friends longer than the Elves who came from Valinor, so the latter have no right to complain and make demands.

Nice to know that Legolas was feeling these Elves were disparaging the Mortals. Out of the ones who came from Valinor, I think he was the one who has the most experience in living with Mortals and would appreciate what they can do. Though he's certainly the one who knows best how hard it is to lose them later on, too.

And it was nice to get this insight into Legolas' thoughts and feelings. I always liked him, and so far he hasn't been getting that much screen time, even though that was understandable. Anyway, I am glad he's following his heart and trying to do something not only useful, but which he is interested in and probably going to be good at, when he has learned what he needs to.

Author Reply: The Valinórean Elves really had no right to complain about the change in plans, so it was good that Glorfindel put his foot down and Finrod deferred to him on the matter.

I'd been wanting to highlight Mirkwood Leoglas for some time but it wasn't until Dreamflower wrote her character sketch based on my story that I found the perfect means to do so. We'll be seeing more of Legolas now that he's found his calling.

Thanks, Kitty. I appreciate the review.

As expected, the change of plans gave some problems in the first part. It has been moved slightly to the background during the Alex and Gareth parts of the story, but we see here how all problems between both groups have not been sorted out yet, and that might take a longer time.

“I said, ‘end of discussion’. What part of that did any of you fail to understand?”
Finrod knows how to keep his people in charge here. It's good to see how the joined rule between him and Glorfindel is working out.

Ah, Legolas, it's good to see more of him here, so far, he's been pretty much in the background unless someone who was good in the woods was needed.

Legolas is really in a position here to make a bridge between the two groups of Elves, but the character study here shows very well how this is hard thing to do for him. And I like it how he still holds Glorfindel and the Twins in high esteem.

I loved seeing Thranduil being mentioned here, even in cameo, he's one of my favorite Elves and you gave him just the streak of Elven arrogance I like about him.

The aurora description was lovely and sure a sight to behold. Under the right conditions, the aurora can been seen where I live, but living in a town makes it o lot harder to catch than.

About Legolas' part in the Hobbit's movies, I've always been hoping/saying he should be in there as well. The fact he wasn't mentioned and the character was a matter of fact not even created doesn't stop the fact that he should canonically be around there. So I guess, yeah for that! I'm not quite sure if his part is really overused or if other parts in the movies aren't really overused too, but I take it just as fun watching.

Author Reply: I'd been wanting to showcase Legolas for some time but until Dreamflower wrote her character sketch, I didn't know how I wanted to do it. This was the perfect vehicle. I'm glad you enjoyed the glimpse of Thranduil and his particular brand of elven arrogance. I like Thranduil a lot and he always seems to get bad press, but he's just fun to write. Believe it or not, we'll actually see him for real in Elf Academy 4 and not just as a cameo.

As for Legolas in the Hobbit movie, I just love him in it and I look forward to seeing more of him in the next movie. I hope when the extended version of the second movie comes out there will be additional Legolas-Thranduil scenes as the two actors really portrayed the father-son dynamics well.

Anyway, thanks for reviewing, FV_Whisper. I appreciate it very much.

Hi, I've been reading this series for quite some time now, but never reviewed as I never had anything meaningful or funny to add as I'm not as well-read in your universe as some of the others, but today I was reading this chapter and had a question...

"Perhaps there was some truth to that, but he had a unique perspective on the Valar that Thranduil could never have, never having actually died and spent time in Mandos, however short that time was."

Legolas died at some point in your verse? Is that elaborated somewhere in your stories?

Author Reply: Hello CuriousCat. The story of Legolas ending up in Mandos, however briefly, can be found in "Playing Chess with Lord Námo" and its sequel "Ab 'Urth". You can also read about Thranduil's reaction to what happened in "QUARREL: Confronting Námo", which can be found in my "Fiondil's Tapestry" collection (chapter 23). Enjoy.

Whew, glad that they got that straightened out without any kind of blood shed. I wondered about the good prince. He spent a lot of time with mortal beings it had to be heart breaking to see them go from babe to death in some instances. But as a cop, he would do good at that. No spiders to have to rid, just dweebs. :)

Author Reply: Hi Laer. Well, I think it was a near thing with the bloodshed but Finrod and Glorfindel managed to keep everyone calm. Legolas did spend a lot of time with mortals and it must've been heart-breaking when they died, but, as he says, he was the better for having known them. I think he'll make a great cop. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Looks like the whole family, well-wishers, distant relations and acquaintances think they ought have a say in the happy couple's big day, sheesh! Good grief, and they think mortals are bad for arguing at meetings.

The descriptions of the evening and the aurora were just lovely, but getting a peek at what's going on inside Legolas's head was even better. He has been quiet for such a long time and now we get to see why. Maybe he will be more active if the narrative and your muse allows for it - he certainly will have reason to be more active if he does become a cop!

An Elf police officer. I'm suddenly reminded of Star Trek with all the different folks coming together in the Federation. I bet he will look great in a blue uniform, too, hehe. ;)

At least they didn't send Thranduil. Ha! I can see it now, Thranduil trying to set up a kingdom in the woods and getting into fierce arguments with the United States parks service. Loved seeing the little aside between father and son.

Dreamflower, wonderful story and Fiondil, wonderful chapter. It's so much fun seeing the two of you playing off each other's writing, to readers' benefit.

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. I'd want to showcase Legolas more than I had been doing and when Dreamflower wrote her little piece I just knew what I wanted to do with him. I think we'll be seeing more of him in this story and in the next now that he's no longer staying in the background. Thanks for reading. It's much appreciated.

I love Legolas' musings. At least now I know why he didn't speak up earlier. Legolas as a cop will be great. I just hope Dave Michaelson can be convinced. It seems to me that these last 2 chapters are setting up the stage for the next part of the roller coaster. The story is taking another to me unexpected turn.

Author Reply: We'll see how convinced Dave Michaelson is about Legolas joining his force in the next chapter. You're right that we have finished an Alex-arc and we are shifting gears a bit. The next several chapters will revolve more around Legolas, though not exclusively, as we move the story on to its conclusion, though, trust me, you'll be reading this story into the New Year, as there's still much to tell.

Thanks for reading and reviewing, obsidianj. I appreciate it.

Should we be keeping our eyes open for C.S.I.:Wiseman in future Fall Line ups?

Still reading if not really reviewing.

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Unlikely, Lynda, but you never know. I'm glad you're still reading. Review when you can. Thanks. Hugs back.

Cop Legolas! ... somehow this makes me glee

Author Reply: You and everyone else, booksworm. We'll see in the next chapter how successful Legolas is in convincing Dave Michaelson to let him join his police force. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

May the fourth be with you!

That was a great jibe from Elladan. I was cracking up as I read it.

So Legolas is going to be a cop, this is going to be entertaining. I'm sure there will be heavy moments, like him giving his heart to the mortals, as well as lighter moment reading s. Looking forward to reading the many adventures I'm sure he'll get into.

Please forgive any errors, writing on my kindle.

Sincerely
Lin

Author Reply: Hi Lin. I couldn't resist the Star Wars reference, especially when I saw how the calendar for 2012 lined up.

We'll see whether Legolas actually becomes a cop and how he goes about doing so in the next chapter. I'm sure he'll make a great one.

Thanks for leaving a review. It's greatly appreciated.

First, congratulations on reaching Chapter 80. Quite an accomplishment for continuing a story so diligently. I wonder how many keyboards you have worn out over the years writing your universe.

Legolas, son of Thranduil, has indeed been involved with mortals more than a lot of the elves here in Wiseman. He already knows the heartaches and the love that can come from that association. His years spent protecting the people of Mirkwood and the dangerous path taken as one of the nine walkers could be interpreted as a law keeper in a way. I really hope that Dave will look at what is being offered and decide that Legolas would make a good law enforcer. If he does, Legolas will have a high scale of learning the ways of the modern mortal. Talk about discussions over supper then!

I enjoyed Dreamflower's and your thoughts about Legolas. I am now over to read the original that Dreamflower wrote. Have a good weekend. It looks like autumn may make a brief appearance.

Author Reply: Thanks, rikki, on the congratulations. I suppose 80 chapters is quite an accomplishment, but you still have 40 more chapters to read and then on to Elf Academy 4! I've only worn out one keyboard over the years, btw.

Anyway, Legolas is a smart Elf and I'm sure he'll take to modern police techniques like a duck to water, assuming he manages to convince Dave to let him join the force. We'll see how that goes in the next chapter.

Dreamflower's character sketch came at the right time for me because I'd been wanting to showcase Legolas more but hadn't found a way to do it without disrupting the flow of the narrative. This was the perfect way of doing so and I'm glad she let me dip my little toe into her universe in this manner.

Have a great weekend yourself and thanks for the review. It's greatly appreciated.
