Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 23 Review(s)

So Glorfindel is fighting the healing sleep? Somehow I am not that surprised, knowing how stubborn he can be. Oh, and I am happy to know Manveru and Erunáro are involved, too. Troublemakers or not, I really like them, they were always some of my favourite Maiar.

How typical of Glorfindel to wake up that early and trying to get out of the hospital straight away even after major surgery. And even wanting to go to Fairbanks straight away. While I hope he doesn't have some premonition of something bad to happen, I can't help but feel sorry for everyone who is going to have to deal with him now. Finrod included.

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Glorfindel gives new meaning of the word "stubborn", that's for sure, but I think Finrod knows how to handle him, having had experience with the ellon's stubbornness. And I've always liked Manveru and Erunáro as well. Unfortunately, they don't play a very large role in the EA universe as yet. Perhaps later.

Thanks for the review. I appreciate it.

Glorfindel is one stubborn elf. If it would be anyone else lying in ICU, he would make sure that elf would stay there until cleared by the healers. But he himself doesn't think he needs to abide by the rules of common sense, he would apply to anyone else. Loved the comment when he was seeing himself. When you are very ill you rarely look good. That should have given him a hint of how sick he really is. But I don't think he was thinking clearly.
If he can keep down real food, than he is on the mend. But I don't think haring off to Fairbanks is a good idea. He needs some more time to heal.

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. He's very stubborn and has little patience with things like rules. And while, as an Elf, he can heal more quickly than Mortals, it doesn't follow that he can just get up and go. I'm sure the doctors and Finrod will make sure he stays put for a little while until they're sure he doesn't suffer a relapse. Thanks for reviewing. It's appreciated.

It seems that nothing can change Glorfindel, not even an experience like that. *grin* That is one stubborn elf, going after the twins the second he is awake... or at least trying to. I really liked Glorfindel's reaction to seeing himself (not handsome and looking like something an orc has dragged in).

I'm curious about the "Being of Light". Olórin or someone else?

I also think that this may be the first time Glorfindel has been bested by a five feet tall woman.

Author Reply: Glorfindel is... Glorfindel. LOL!

I've left it ambiguous as to who the Being of Light might be, but I suspect it's an aspect of Atar, because I think He's the only one Who would have been able to deal with Glorfindel, especially in the spiritual state. The fact that Glorfindel doesn't recognize the Being should not be surprising, since he has never seen Atar or even any of the Valar or Maiar in their true spiritual forms.

And I think you're right about this being the first time Glorfindel has been bested by a five-foot tall mortal woman. I think that rather than her choking him surprised him more than anything. LOL!

Thanks for reviewing, someone. I appreciate it.

Hello Fiondil!

So dear Glorfindel is finally awake!! I'm so happy for him!! Though I know the recovery will be long and a little painful, more so if he is overdoing it. But ohh well, was kind of expecting him to act like that... I would have been deatly worried if he acted complacent. Though I hope Finrod can divise some games or entertainments to keep Glorfindel content and resting in a bed.

I lked that neither the Valar or the Maiar were willing to take any chances on his recovery, deciding to better be there all the time. Also I'm wondering how does Namo feel to have people praying to him hoping to avoid death?

Glorfindel is right in that the twins will listen only to him and no one else, he must be the one to go pick them up!! I wouldn't like being the twins when he does catch up to them, beacuse they will not only have to deal with an angry and dissapointed Glorfindel, but also with an angry Ron for taking his daughter, an angry Finrod for leaving and therefore having his brother go pick them up even though he's quite hurt and an angry Kyle for disobeying his orders. Although if and when they return, will they take up residence again in Edehellond or will they now move to an apartment or hotel for the moment? To have some distance from the Valinorean Elves I mean...

From the last chapter, it felt somehow forced and as an order to have Helena apologize to Glorfindel, I just don't feel she is sorry of what she said... I'm quite disapointed by Finrod's reaction to Helena's comment, I was expecting him to be furious and while you do mention that he was, he kind of lost that anger when he heard what she said, that Glorfindel was just a Lord of a House that no longer exists. In essence he did nothing, just reminded her that Glorfi is his brother and as far as he is concerned that is the highest tittle. So any claim to authority Glorfindel may have comes from that title? I hope you have Glorfi being horribly dissapointed in that horrible elleth and having him look into other fish in the sea or at the very least have him reafirm his bachelorhood.

Great chapter as always!
Monalex

Author Reply: Hi Monalex. Finrod is furious, but he is dealing with an elleth rather than with an ellon and his responses to her are going to be different. She knows how angry and disappointed he is in her simply by him addressing her as "Daughter", which is not actually a term of endearment so much as a warning that he is speaking to her as a parent to a child or, in his case more specifically, as a king to a subject. Whether Helyanwë truly understands what she has done and what she needs to do to make things right again is another question and we will see how Glorfindel handles this eventually. Right now, he's too intent on haring off to Fairbanks after the Twins to worry about anything or anyone else.

Thanks for your comments. They are much appreciated.

So who's the being of light? Glorfindel's met, over the course of "Elf Interrupted", all the Valar, Eru, and the Flame Imperishable, but he doesn't seem to recognize his visitor.

Then again, he had trouble recognizing himself, too; I suppose he's not at the top of his mental game at the moment.

Author Reply: Hello Sasha. You're the first one to even ask about the being of light. I've purposely left it ambiguous so readers can draw their own conclusions. I think it may be Atar, or it could be Manwë in his true form (having established in "Elf, Interrupted" that Glorfindel is or was Manwë's apprentice). That Glorfindel doesn't recognize his visitor isn't surprising, since he has never seen Eru or the Valar in their true states and wouldn't necessarily recognize their aurae for what they are. And, as you point out, he's not at the top of his mental game at the moment, and that, too, could be a factor.

Anyway, thanks for leaving a comment. I very much appreciate it.

So glad Glorfindel is up and moving around. Good sign that he is wanting real food to eat. :)

I do not envy the twins once he gets a hold of them tho. I have a feeling it will not be fun for either of them. (Yikes!)

Nurse Callahan...he is lucky it wasn't Nurse Ratchet (One flew over the cuckoos nest)She seems pretty nice and mellow :)

Author Reply: Hi Laer. Well, you can't put a good Elf down for long. LOL! We'll see what happens between the Twins and Glorfindel when he finally catches up with them. And Nurse Callahan may not be a Nurse Ratchet, but she's nobody's fool either and doesn't take guff from the patients, no matter who they are.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Fiondil, I don't think people are really expecting you to write about everything we want to hear. That would take ages and I'm already surprised how much stories you produce. I think you've written more then Tolkien himself has ever published!

Hey, and what's wrong with some imagination? I can really see a Fiondilverse getting started *snorts* Too bad I'm like the worlds slowest writer :P

Author Reply: Thanks, FV_Whisper. I appreciate your kind words and encouragement. And, as I said, I have no problem with others playing in the Fiondilverse (a couple of people already have). The more the merrier.

Glorfindel is finally awake. What a scary situation he's coming out of. I'm glad he opted for life.

Mischievous twins watching mischievous twins sounds like a lot of fun to me.

Author Reply: A very scary situation, Tari, but he made the right decision. And we'll see how much fun everyone in Fairbanks has in the next chapter. Thanks for reviewing. It's appreciated.

Oh Glorfindel - *again* with that must-help-Turgon's-descendents thing! At least he wasn't battering at the door in Mandos again (thanks to Olorin's pursuasive efforts). Yeah, I think we might have to start a Nurse Callahan Fan Club too...

Can't wait to see what's up with Sarah and the twins (and the Maia twins?? oh dear...).

We really, truly do understand that you can't spend the rest of the ages of Arda detailing every little thing in this world you've imagined; it's a testimony to the depth you've given your characters that we've become so emotionally invested in them. But don't be too surprised if you inspire Fiondilverse fan fiction! :-)

*Tea for me, thanks. Anyone care for clotted cream, lemon curd or raspberry jam with the scones?*

Author Reply: Hi Lyana. I'm sure Nurse Callahan would be honored to know that someone's started a fan club about her. LOL!

I'm glad to know at least someone appreciates the fact that I can't spend all my time detailing the lives the the Wiseman Elves and I am honored that people so love my characters that they want to know more about them. And if others want to play in the Fiondilverse, they're more than welcome to do so.

*Clotted cream and raspberry jam with the scones for me, please, oh and tea, of course.*

Thanks for reviewing. It's very much appreciated.

I'm just glad that it's Olorin watching over him at the moment. I'd think that he'd feel the connection pretty well at this point.

I agree--a stubborn cuss he is!

Author Reply: I think he would feel the connection as well, Larner. And he is stubborn. There's no doubt about that. Thanks for commenting. It's appreciated.
