I found that Frodo's feelings the day after the Birthday Party are perfectly described by the Dickens quote.

Author Reply: Yes, I wanted something a little less obvious than my first impulse, which was right after the Ring was destroyed-- and it seems that in Frodo's life there must have been many such ambivalent times. And Bilbo's leaving must have been on of them!
