An Alphabet for Middle-earth  by Dreamflower 8 Review(s)

I love it! Poor Merry.
What a great instrument to play though. I love the sound of pan pipes... so mellow. It's amazing what a little confidence can do.

Author Reply: Yes, my Pippin plays several instruments. Legolas made the pipes for him when they were in Lothlorien, and taught him to play them. Pippin also plays the fiddle (taught by Aunt Esme), the lap harp (taught by Auntie Peridot) and the Tookish pipes--bagpipes (taught by Cousin Ferdinand).

As for Merry, he doesn't play anything but the tambour, and that's only because his mother made him. He never plays it after he's grown if he can help it--but he loves to listen to Pippin play. And Pippin is so good that he's kind of spoiled Merry for listening to anyone else, LOL!

Very sweet of Pippin to be so patient and to give such a great gift - that of confidence.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Yes indeed, that *was* the gift he gave! and I think Legolas would have been pleased at the use Pippin made of his gift.

That is very ... generous of Pippin. But then, he is the sort of person to know instinctively that treasure builds up exponentially when you give it away.

As one who has endured offspring playing the recorder rather badly, I feel for Merry. Even as I admire Pippin for his ... nobility of purpose.

Author Reply: Pippin is indeed a generous soul, and you are absolutely right.

As one who plays the recorder rather badly, I sympathize with Merry myself. And so do my dogs.

Oh, that was too cute, lol! I easily identified with Ilberic, though. :-P That wonderful Pippin has a golden heart, doesn't he?

PF

Author Reply: Pippin *does* have a golden heart; he's generous to a fault.

*snerk* The only bad one in this fic is Merry! What a stinker! :P Thank goodness Pippin was teaching Ilbie and not Merry; or they wouldn't have gotten past the first lesson!

Author Reply: *giggle* He *is* being a bit of a twit, in this one, but he'd never *say* anything out loud to Ilberic, or hurt his feelings. But Merry's own interest in music is minimal. He doesn't mind singing at celebrations or walking along, but he doesn't want to play anything (even the tambour, which his mother made him do when he was younger), and he'd much rather just listen to Pippin or his mother, who have rather spoiled him for listening to anyone else, LOL!

No, I'm afraid Ilbie would have looked in vain to Merry for *music* lessons, LOL!

Elf magic and confidence make a powerful combination, I think. How lovely! Ilberic needed confidence, and the thought these were special transferred his concern off himself, allowing his true talent to be seen at last.

Ah, Merry--you ought to realize that of course Ilberic would be good, playing such a special set of pipes, pipes triply blest--by the one who made them; the land in which they were wrought; and by the one who bestowed them. He IS Fallohide through and through, our Pippin.

Author Reply: Exactly! And of course, Pippin knew that intuitively.

Sadly, Merry's own lack of interest in playing an instrument causes him to be less than patient. He's been a bit spoiled by listening to Pippin, who's a superb musician, and who was never a beginner for long when learning a new instrument.

And, of course, you are quite right about the pipes *and* Pippin, and I think that Legolas himself would appreciate Pippin's giving the pipes to Ilbie.

Dear Pippin! What a wonderful thing to do.

I could use a "magic" fiddle!

A dear story :-)

Author Reply: He's a generous soul, isn't he?

So could I. *sigh* I just have to make do with writing Pippin as a musical genius.

Aww! *hugs Pippin* He's sooo sweet! And I love Merry's POV here! Poor Ilby, I can sympathize. I wish I'd had Pippin when I was learning how to play the piano (though I know he wouldn't know, but if he lived today he surely would :)).

I don't know if those pipes are magical, but your stories certainly are! I so needed a smile today. Thank you! :) :)
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Pippin *is* such a sweetie!

Merry's POV usually comes easy for me--he doesn't seem to mind letting me know what he's thinking most of the time.

I'm quite sure Pip *would* play the piano!

Glad I gave you a smile dear!
