| I do not know how I missed this story earlier, but it was a perfect read for today. I love stories of the earlier days of Aragorn's reign when he had so much to learn and do. This is just lovely. Thank you so much. Author Reply: This was in response to a Christmas challenge, and I had to find some way to work into canon how it might have been that somehow the Hobbits could have helped Aragorn find the "perfect gift" for the first Yule he and Arwen would spend together. | What a great Yule story. Loved it the Pippin was trying to get all that stuff back to the shire. I think that Aragorn found perfect gifts for Arwen, the different charms was a great idea. | The perfect gift indeed - both the shawl and the bracelet, and Arwen will treasure both, not just for the images contained there but because they are proof of Aragorn's love and thoughtfulness, and the love and care of the hobbits. | A lovely piece, Larner. Pippin is correct: if you see the perfect gift, buy it then because it's most likely not going to be there the next time you think of it. My mother would often, when buying Christmas gifts, put one gift aside for a future birthday (or vice versa). I liked the description of the different charms and the discussion about the proper materials for the shawl. Obviously, you either do that sort of thing yourself or know someone who does to get that kind of detail down. Merry Christmas. Author Reply: I crochet, and tried filet crochet once--only once, though. My mind likes to skip steps, you see, and I'd have to redo entire rows because I'd skip one or more. I certainly have looked at enough of the graphs for both filet crocheting and cross-stitch, which my mother did--the graphs for both were remarkably similar; and I've read of folks like Sylvia Sydney who created her own cross-stitch patterns. | Buying Yule gifts in July is certainly early, but Pip’s right: If he’s finding the perfect gift for someone, he has to buy it then, because often he’ll not get it later. And how convenient to know the King is about to send waggons to the North and to be good enough friends with him to ask him for some space :) I can *so* see him dragging this giant bundle up to the Citadel - so sweet, thoughtful and touching of him to find gifts for his loved ones at home, even thoug he can't carry them all with him. Somehow I doubt the ‘I’m home again and you have to forgive me’-gift worked very well with Paladin and Eglantine, at least in the beginning. Though of course, now I am wondering how particularly these two were taking the gifts - I hope they were nice enough, considering how much effort Pippin made. Found Merry talking so expertly about different threats and advising Aragorn amusing – and it was great how all the Hobbits joined in and helped to find the right source for this gift. Though I was sighing about the fuss Frodo made about the drawings. Glad he did them, even if in secret, and good to know he’ll get his memorial, if he wants it or not, as I still disagree with him about the matter ;-) And loved the way even Elrond was roped in to help with the bracelet, too. Anyway, these gifts were absolutely great, Larner! What a wonderful thing to get – and that goes for the shawl as much as the bracelet. Lucky Arwen - I am sure she appreciated them very much! (And now I wonder if Pippin couldn't talk Marigold into making something - say, to lay on a sideboard or the like - with the faces of the four Travellers for Aragorn, as he can't wear lace shawls?) I used to buy gifts at all seasons--before my situation changed and now it seems I rarely have any extra money to do much of anything when I see the perfect gift. And it would be Pippin who would see the RIGHT gift and would get it, no matter how difficult it might be to have sent home! Of course the rest would go with small and light things; only Pippin would think of buying a saddle as a gift! And I'm certain that after working out the details of the shawl he had Marigold make for Esmeralda Merry would have begun to appreciate what it takes to make such things. I've not done much with filet crocheting because I have trouble keeping in the right row of the pattern--I keep skipping rows; so I've done only one or two such pieces. For some reason doing motifs or regular patterns is easier, and I love doing different stitches; so doing a tablecloth or afghan of blocks is easier for me than trying to do filet crocheting. My stepdad's mom, though, did it all. And who knows--maybe one day Marigold just MIGHT make something for Arwen! And thank you! | |

| The perfect gift for Arwen and perfect gifts for so many other people and, of course, the perfect gift for all of us at this special time of the year. Thank you Larner. Aragorn is not the only one who needs to take a leaf out of Pippin's book. I say so every year! Happy Yule and a wonderful new year. I shall be off line while at my parents. Please pray for them. Mum now has an infection around her cathetar site and is bypassing it big time. Dad is feeling rotton with a nasty cough and he has had to give up the pipe-weed too! Jet is fine so I am hoping he will keep me sane! Author Reply: So glad you like it. I really need to get up and get the bread started, but can't seem to get the energy up yet. Worked all night last night, and we ended up watching ROTK for movie night before I found myself in the kitchen fixing up eighteen meals for the next week for two clients. Christmas is so sparse this year, and am feeling a bit depressed myself, and am missing my husband a lot at the moment--my husband and my mom. Am praying big time for both of your parents! | I love the details about all the gifts - the candlesticks for Faramir and Eowyn reminded me to polish up a vignette I'd rough-drafted months ago (just so you don't think I used your idea as an uncredited inspiration), and especially the description of the charms on Arwen's bracelet. The bit about Celebrian's handmaiden and guard and their young son who left Middle-earth with Celebrian really intrigued me - have you written about them elsewhere? Author Reply: I'm so glad you like them. And I NEVER worry about other borrowing ideas from me, considering how I do so from others! I haven't written about Calistie as yet, although that portion of Stirring Rings will come soon enough--IF I can get past the final battles in Arnor with the Witch-king. A joyful Yule to you. | |
