A Shire Sketchbook  by Baggins Babe 13 Review(s)

Ah Rufus!

Such a wise cat! I love his ability to see the light of people's souls! And how fitting that Aragorn and Frodo should shine with the same intensity of light.

I laughed when I read that Gimli was thought upon with favor because "he was generous with the tidbits" Always the way to a cat's heart! Rufus, a cat of much wisdom and like us can't really understand the fuss over the babies! "the very smalll ones all look alike!" LOL!

I love it!

MM

Author Reply: Rufus is a very wise cat - he likes Gimli for such practical reasons!

Babies always look alike to me - unless they have fur, of course. :-)

Glad you liked it - now I look forward to more reviews *hint*

My Master's Light of Being blazes like a star as he looks with joy at Sam and his friends. The King's Light flares in response, and I suddenly see that they are two of a kind. How strange, and yet how fitting, that the great King Elessar and a hobbit of the Shire should be brothers of the spirit. The Valar must have planned it, for the Dark One would never have suspected such a thing. It is good to have such Men and Elves in the Shire and to see everyone united in love.

They were both blessed by the grace of Iluvatar to be so. This is so like Larner's writing. It's good to see it in another place.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: I do enjoy writing from Rufus' point of view - he is a very wise cat, as those beautiful creatures tend to be. I've always suspected that they see into a person's soul and the Ancient Egyptians certainly thought so.

I love these fics! Rufus is such a thoughtful cat. Of course he'd know who Aragorn was from the first. :) I love that he recognises that Frodo and Aragorn are brothers of the spirit, and his thoughts on Sam are lovely and true.

It is good to have such Men and Elves in the Shire and to see
everyone united in love.

Yes, indeed!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Rufus is a very wise cat - I've had cats who were kittens all their lives but there have been others who seem so wise and thoughtful I wondered if they had lived before. We always said that one of them was a cat in Ancient Egypt - she had a dignity and mystery which was obvious to everyone who saw her. That's the thing about cats - you never quite know what they're thinking.

Wise and insightful cat, our Rufus. He sees the men as they truly are, though I laughed aloud about his opinion of Radagast’s birds. And he is right about Bilbo’s old verse fitting for Sam, too. These occasional insights in Rufus’ opinion of others are rather amusing and intriguing.

Author Reply: Well why is that wizard spending so much time talking to birds when there's an intelligent cat around? No wonder Rufus is miffed. :-))

I'm so glad you reminded me that I had not *quite* caught up with all the updates yet--people keep posting more, and I keep losing track, LOL!

Rufus is a very wise, very Jellicle Cat--I think he must be a good deal like Ol' Deuteronomy, so that everyone loves him!

Author Reply: I always picture Ol'Deuteronomy when I'm writing about Rufus - or rather I remember the late lamented Dingle, who was definitely in Deuteronomy mould.

Glad you enjoyed it - missed hearing from you.

I do like the reflections of the cat, on what he thinks of the fellowship. And that Aragorn can count on Gimli to tell him the truth.

Author Reply: Rufus likes to make his opinions known - he features heavily in several chapters in this collection.

I think someone like Gimli would be good to have around - kings are surrounded by 'yes-men' and toadies, so an outspoken Dwarf would be a refreshing change.

Very different, and very beautiful. I like rufus being able to see the lights of people's spirits, most interesting, and yet I've often felt the same thing about cats myself.

Author Reply: I've always thought that cats can see into a person's soul, and I'm sure Rufus can see the Lights of Being. Rufus has quite a lot to say for himself and features in several chaper in this series - I enjoy writing him.

Thank you for the feedback.

How delightful to hear from Rufus! Love the fact that the poem Bilbo wrote about Aragorn fits Sam as well. That is one I never would have thought of. Thanks so much for such a wonderful story.

Author Reply: You can't keep a good cat down! Naturally he has his own opinions of the party.

I've always loved that poem and it does fit Sam too. Dear Sam, even the cat recognises his qualities.

That is one very astute cat! I am glad that he gets to do more than just look at the King. A lovely read BB just what I needed after being at my parents for 24 hours.

Good guess on the location BTW. But I am now working for a Catholic Parish as a Catechist about 6 miles further south also beginning with H. I was very shy and naive about such things as user names when I signed on with SOA. And I think it is a bit late to change now unless anyone has an appropriate suggestion!!! *ggg*

Author Reply: Rufus is very astute, you're right! Glad you enjoyed his thoughts on the visitors and the hobbits.

Ah, but I think your user name is great. I was absolutely clueless about such things - I'd never used a pc until about four years ago - yet another thing I have to thank the book and films for!

This was absolutely lovely! Quite a different perspsective on these events.

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. Rufus is quite a character and great fun to write. It is interesting to see our beloved characters from his point of view.
