Stop putting yourself down, Samwise

Two to three days for a splinter wound? I think Strider's being overly cautious. :) Still, it was fun to see Sam get a little bit of pampering and his dilemma over letting an elf carry him. He may feel useless now, but he'll soon prove his worth beyond doubt, even his own.

Author Reply: It was a *big* splinter! LOL! But really, you know, hobbits go barefoot, and I think he simply wanted to avoid an infection. Also to avoid Sam putting his foot down in the River again for a day or so.

*grin* It's great to see a new review for one that's been out a while! Thanks!

Oh, Dreamflower! I love it! I LOVE it! That's the best Sam h/c I've seen in a long time! Poor Sam, he doesn't know how to take tlc when he needs it, and yet he gives it as naturally as breathing. He really has no idea, does he? :-) God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: No, he really doesn't understand, that he should get a turn, too, to have a little TLC. Thank you.

Poor Sam! I guess he didn't watch the extended version of the DVD's or else he would have learnt about Sean's accident. More than a passing similarity, I would say. lol!

Sam deserves some cosseting every now and then. It's good to see him being pampered by everyone else for a change. Unseemly for him to be carried by an elf - typical Sam.

"Merry huffed, and said “You’ve nothing to be sorry for, Sam!”

“Oh, I don’t know,” said Pippin, “I’m sure the silly ass thrust a tree in his foot on purpose so he could eat our cooking.”"

That's Pippin for you - a cheeky comment that hits home and makes his point.

Sam should just rest and enjoy being appreciated.

Author Reply: LOL! You certainly caught my inspiration--well, that and RSF's request for some Sam h/c.

And yes, Sam deserves to get the TLC himself from time to time.

I could see Pippin being impressed by that splinter. The male adolescent fascination with all things gross, you know!

Yes, he should; but he's just not accustomed to it.

That reminds me of the accident Sean Astin had during the filming of the trilogy when he had to run in the Anduin after Frodo's boat at the end of FotR. Was it inspired by this?
Anyway, I loved it. It's nice to have Sam being the one to be comforted and looked after for a change. Usually it is Sam who looks after the others - it was surely not so easy for him to accept the reversed situation. But it is good he knows the others care for him, too.

Author Reply: Yes, it was inspired by that. I had originally planned to make the injury more serious (as was Sean's--he had to get stitches, if I recall) but decided not to complicate the Quest too much.

Yes, a bit of Sam comfort is always a good thing. I'm glad Rabidsamfan asked for this. It was fun to write.

Oooh. Poor Sam. A log stuck in his foot sounds seriously painful. And he would be embarrassed by having attention drawn to him! And being carried by an elf - and not just any elf, but a prince! Just because he was trying to be helpful. It's enough to put him off the river permanently.

Author Reply: The River and boating just weren't in the cards for poor Sam. He was a typical hobbit in that respect, with no Took or Brandybuck in him to leaven it. And he's not terribly used to being the center of attention either, poor fellow.

Love seeing Sean Astin's real life experience making the film made into a moment in which Sam can be cosseted as he fully deserves. Bless the Hobbits! Love it thoroughly. And Sam is one of the most useful along, bless him anyway!

Author Reply: Well, Sam deserves to be cosseted, and Sean Astin's moment of pain deserves to be memorialized.

Of course Sam's useful, he just wasn't *feeling* it at that moment, bless his heart.

“Thunder!” said Pippin. “You’ve got a log in your foot, Sam!”

Well, I think Sean's wound was really severe. After all, he was directly taken by helicopter to the next hospital.
But this "log" reminds me of another incident involving Dominic Monaghan. While jumping onto the Brandywine Ferry he got a wooden splint in his foot and told his fellow hobbits to watch, when it was taken out, because it had to be really huge. In fact it was rather tiny - and Billy continued teasing him about it for a very long time ;-)

Author Reply: You are quite right on all counts. I kind of telescoped them into my story to serve my own purpose. Just a wink, if you will, at the movies, while giving dear Sam a chance at some good old fashioned h/c.

I'm sure that Sean Astin would be highly gratified to see this being woven into the tale. Poor Sam so useful yet cant see it and feeling useless!

Author Reply: *chuckle* So you recognized my inspiration, eh?

Sam was just so used to *being* useful, that I can understand him feeling useless as they traveled in the boats. There was so little he could *do* when they traveled like that.

Glad you liked it.
