Dreamflower's Mathoms I  by Dreamflower 9 Review(s)
good_one_pipReviewed Chapter: 66 on 6/27/2006
I liked the title; it gives me courage, for I have literally small hands. But I long to make a difference in the world. The tales of the unlikely, ordinary people who change the world are the tales people remember... like the rough hands of a carpenter who changed the world at the sacrifice of his own life, right? It makes me think of what Sam says about "folks in the stories" in the Two Towers.

During the school year I really have no time for LOTR. But the summer...that is when I first read the book series and it is then that I try to recapture the feelings that the tale brings to my heart. I do this by rereading the books, watching the movies for the first time in months, listening to the music, and reading stories like those on this site. Thank you for appreciating the emotion of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. So many people miss the heart of the story. This poem captured the heart. The tale of four small hobbits willing to leave their home and endure the most horrific experiences for those they loved. How little of that we see in our world today. That is why I keep returning to Middle Earth as the years pass. Thank you for bringing tears to my eyes a second time tonight. Tears of emotion I have missed. I am going to print this poem and send it to my circle of LOTR-loving friends and I shall say that it was written by Dreamflower, for that is how you always will remain in my mind. You and Grey Wonderer... if you only knew how refreshing it is for me to read your stories, how my image of characters has deepened because of what you've written, even how my life was changed... I know this is a long "review," but it is so refreshing to find someone in the world who understands these things and uses them to make a difference in the Great Story.

Author Reply: Oh. Wow.

I am so glad to know that you feel that way about my stories. It makes me feel very humble indeed. Now you've made *me* have tears...

Thank you.

*sniff* I'm in awe...and tears! That is amazing. And I think I can write songs! Yeah, right! I've never read a LOTR poem that even comes close. God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: I've read a few of yours; they are quite touching as well.

I had a lot of trouble with this one, until I realized that *one line* sort of scanned to "I Sit Beside the Fire and Think". I threw everything else out and started over, and it just flowed.

I thank you very much.

This is so wonderful!! I'm sorry i didn't read it when the auto-email about it first came through. At least I read it now. It made me teary. Yes, stature is not a good gauge of courage nor of heart.

Wonderful!!!!!

Author Reply: Thank you! I just wanted to do our lads justice.

Wonderful, Dreamflower! I am truly impressed! More so because I am completely lost if I have to come up even with two lines when it have to be rhymes!

Author Reply: I thank you so much.

This was harder than usual for me. Most of the time, poems just come to me, but for this chapter of "Chance Encounter" I needed something very particular. I am pleased at the response to it.

*sniff* You had me in tears with this one, Dreamflower, but how beautifully you express it - that those small hands carried the greatest burden. Your poetry is wonderful.

Author Reply: Thank you very much. (hands you a virtual hankie)

I had a hard time with that one. I am so glad you think I succeeded in getting the idea across.

Oh, Dreamflower, I am in awe, true awe. My skills as a poet are so slight, yet you have done such wonders here. I am in honor of your minstrel....and your muse.

Thank you. So well expressed.

Author Reply: Hmm. My reply didn't show up. Try again.

I had a very hard time getting this one "just right", and tossed away numerous rough drafts. You may recognize the meter and rhyme scheme as the same one in "I Sit Beside the Fire and Think" that Bilbo sings just before the Company leaves. The rhyme scheme and meter I had been trying to use just wasn't working, but I was humming that one day, and suddenly realized that one of my lines would fit it. I scrapped everything else and started over, and it all just finally flowed.

I thought you especially might like the last two verses. I was thinking of your Frodo when I wrote them.

"Perhaps it was to humble us
when Chance or Purpose called--
and into smallest hands did give
the greatest deed of all."

Beautiful indeed!

Menelcar the Minstrel is a wise man!

Author Reply: Well, I soon hope to get "Chance Encounter" beta'd, and then you will be able to meet him. Unless you've read "Life of a Bard" and have already met him.

That is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read. Now you made my cry. Thank you so, so much for this! :D

Author Reply: Oh, Anso!

You are so very sweet! I sweated bullets over this song, which is why the chapter took so long to get posted; I'm glad it came across the way I hoped it would.
