Dreamflower's Mathoms I  by Dreamflower 7 Review(s)

I've seen so many fics about Pippin's scarf, all creative and sweet, but this is definitely one of the best! I never thought of its having been made by Primula. I don't think she's in enough stories, so this was a treat! And I can certainly see Frodo giving Pippin the scarf for just that reason.
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: When I wrote "Conspiracy"--one of my earliest stories--I had a part in it where Frodo gives Pippin the scarf, and I always hoped one day to tell a bit more about it. But it just seemed to me that Primula might be very good at needlework and knitting and so forth, and that she might have made that scarf.

Very like Pippin to offer to give the scarf back to Frodo. It's typical for a child to lose things and not think anything of it. Frodo would have assumed that Primula would just make him another one. He had no way of knowing that her time was so limited and that she'd never have the chance to replace it. Pippin, on the other hand, knew when Frodo gave him the scarf that Frodo intended it as a good-bye present, and so he cherished and protected it from the start, and never took for granted the meaning behind the gift.

Author Reply: Very insightful, and very, very true.

Pippin did cherish it always, and think how much more he will cherish it in a couple of years...

I can see him, at that point, putting it carefully away to be preserved as a memento of the beloved cousin who is gone, and maybe taking it out one day to show little Faramir, and telling him the story behind it.

How sweet of Frodo to give this very treasured reminder of his mother to Pippin! He truly was a very special hobbit. I am glad Pippin took so good care of it. So he had this as a reminder of Frodo, too, after Frodo sailed West.

Author Reply: Oh, yes, Pippin would always treasure and take care of it, to remember both Frodo and Bilbo by.

This almost had me in tears at work!! LOL...that is NOT good! Gotta keep up my salty/crusty personality at work (snorts laughter). I'm a softy at heart, and this pulled at my heartstrings. The images of Primula eargerly spinning yarn and then knitting gifts for her beloved hobbits...I really liked that. How it got passed down from Bilbo to Frodo and then to Pippin is what almost got me. Thank you for such a sweet tale!

Author Reply: It was kind of bittersweet. But I could just imagine how Pip cherished that scarf, and the story behind it would make him cherish it even more.

Oh, this is just beautiful - I love the detail. The sentiment is just lovely, and this is a totally believable glimpse into Frodo's childhood. Well done!

Author Reply: You know, it's funny, I had already pretty much finished the story that Lindelea had me down for, and then this one just popped into my head nearly full-blown, and she was kind enough to say she could use it, too. I guess it came from all the knitting I'd been doing on my Pippin-scarf, LOL!

Sad memories, sad forbodings, but gentle comfort. How appropriate.

Author Reply: Thank you, I found it rather bittersweet myself.

Ah, yes. Lovely story. So much love, wrapped up in a small package.

Thanks!

Author Reply: Thank you for inviting me to take part, and having a chance to come up with this story.
