Dreamflower's Mathoms I  by Dreamflower 6 Review(s)
Queen GaladrielReviewed Chapter: 15 on 4/23/2006
Oh, that was wonderful of Bilbo! Aaaaagh! Lobelia and Drogo? No! Way! Frodo would have never have come into the world, and then what a state all of Middle-earth would be in! I love your letter fics!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Well, but look at it this way--if Lobelia had not been driving Drogo nuts, then Bilbo would never have sent him to Brandy Hall to get away from her, and *still* no Frodo, LOL! So I guess we can give her credit for getting Drogo and Primula together. *grin* (Irony--I love it!)

I enjoy writing fics as letters. You can really capture a POV that way!

What a cool story! I love the way you weave together the various family members, including the S.B.'s. Poor Drogo to have Lobelia interested in him! I rather fancy the way it is Bilbo's actions that bring Drogo and Primula into contact with each other. Really nice change of pace to read a story written as a letter.

Author Reply: I get very fascinated by the family tree. Do you realize that Otho was not of age when Bilbo was gone on his journey? So the legal action to declare him dead and claim the inheritance had to have been started by his father?

I like to do stories or chapters as letters sometimes; it's a natural way to do first person POV.

AHA! So, now we know how Drogo met Primula! Lovely letter!

Author Reply: Well, I figured he would have had to have gone across the River for *some* reason--and escaping Lobelia would certainly be a good one.

Nice...
I like to see it from bilbo's point of view... Drogo at the hall is this how frodo's parents meet... I like the description of Lobellia... She had a voice that could peel paint... As well as with a dragon she may come out with the beter deal...Quiet good...

A good read...It would be good as a continuing story as well...

Author Reply: I'm glad you like my take on Lobelia. Looking at the ages and the timelines in the family tree and in The Hobbit, she would have been fairly young just before Bilbo left. My idea is that she and Otho were newlyweds when they tried to get their hands on Bag End the first time. But I think she probably had a serious crush on Drogo--and the combination of her hurt pride and her lust for Bag End were why she was so nasty to Frodo and Bilbo.

Poor Drogo - imagine being the victim of Lobelia! Although it sounds as if she and Otho were thoroughly deserving of each other. I always rather felt that he had probably been henpecked into submission, but really, I would rather imagine him deserving his 'trouble and strife'.

Good for Bilbo.

Author Reply: I know that I read a lot of fics where Otho is a kind of hen-pecked wimp, but not otherwise so bad. But I think of him as sort of in the same mold as my OCs Clodio and Dago--greedy and unscrupulous, and willing to cut corners to get what he wants. In FotR, it's *Otho* who makes nasty insinuations about Frodo and demands to see Bilbo's will, and offers "bad bargain-prices" for valuable items. We also have JRRTs word in Letter #214 that Otho was ambitious (not a very hobbity trait) to be the head of both the Sackvilles *and* the Bagginses. So I would say he probably deserved Lobelia. That meant that Lotho got a double helping of bad genes.

But thank goodness Drogo was able to keep out of her clutches and meet Primula. Otherwise, where would our blue-eyed lad be? *grin*

A nice ficlet! So this is how Frodo's parents met - Bilbo had a hand in it! :-D
This is so like Lobelia, to use rudeness as a weapon. I can imagine it! What a pity nobody seems truly able to shut Lobelia up! It would be interesting to listen (or read)!

Author Reply: I thought perhaps Bilbo had a hand in it. And at Sam's wedding, Esme told Tina that Lobelia had once fancied Drogo before Primula came along...

Yes, Lobelia is incredibly rude: look how she barged in on Frodo before they moved into Bag End, and the remarks she made. I think that she actually made a point of being rude--it's a crude but effective way to get your own way with people who are a bit more accustomed to politeness.

Hmm...someone who could shut her up? (shoo...shoo...get away from my ankles, bunny!)
