Flint And Fire  by Nol 5 Review(s)
InklingReviewed Chapter: 1 on 3/3/2005
What a delightful story…sly, funny, and beautifully written. I came across it while doing some research on Caranthir, and just couldn’t resist that story summary!

So many clever, tossed-off lines, like this: “After sulking very minimally for having failed to have noticed the key fact of his freedom before…”

And this: “…and he went so far as to sing in public one day (much admired by the Dwarves and applauded in polite horror by his own folk.)”

Sad, in the end, that all his freedom and happiness couldn’t overcome the curse of the Silmarils. But nice to think of him treasuring a secret dwarf name…

Wow. That captured the tone of fairy tales and yet also brought these characters wonderfully alive.

My sympathies are with Caranthir. I am a middle child, although not from a family like his, thank god. So I sympathize with his sense that he is lost among the throng, and I was gladdened when he more or less chose to be happy. I was also struck by his ability to ally with the dwarves and to love one of them. Ha! Take that you other Feanorions!

Author Reply: Hi Daw! Thanks very much, I'm so sorry I didn't respond to this earlier. (Exams! *sob*) You're very kind and I'm so glad you liked the story, and Caranthir. He's been overshadowed by the other Brothers F, certainly. I think perhaps that's why my eye fell on him.

Wow. Just . . . wow. This is remarkable. Not just for the subject, and the pairing, but the characterization, the writing, the style, the grace and wit that pervades this whole story is simply amazing. It reads almost like a faery tale, and I think that rhythm and harmony is what makes it such a pleasure to read. The repetition of "sullenly and darkly" is both very funny and very poignant, particularly given the ending. And Kila's speech patterns are wonderful. Marvellously done. Truly, a fantastic story.

Author Reply: Wow in return. Thank you so much for a wonderful fat review! I feel very puffed up now. Sorry for not replying earlier, I've been studying for exams. I'm so glad you liked Kila's speech too!

How charming! It has the feel of a fairy tale and the feel of the Silmarillion. I enjoyed reading it very much.

Author Reply: Thank you!

Oh, I am happy to find something so nice about Caranthir, who's my favourite Feanorian (probably because he doesn't hang around with the rest of them). That was lovely and romantic in a brusque and humourous way. Can I nominate it for the 'best shafted race' category in the Galvorns?

Author Reply: Ah Marnie, thank you so much! Receiving compliments from writers like you definitely makes me feel like I've done something worthwhile. Of course you have my permission to nominate it all you like. May I return the favour by picking Oak and Willow for Best Noldor Bashing? Also any other category that is befitting of it's superior craftsmanship.
