A New Reckoning  by Dreamflower 6 Review(s)

Yes, these are our lads, and our beloved Elf. Glad Saradoc lit into Merry, for he did deserve it, no matter how much the Bankses deserved it, too.

Author Reply: Yes, Merry *did* deserve it. I think he's a bit hot-headed, for a hobbit, and more prone to using physical means. It only comes out when his loved ones are slighted or threatened--but it's there.

I like Legolas--I think of him as very compassionate, and wanting to do whatever he can for the mortals he calls friends.

Sam and Rose are as sweet as ever...uh-oh! Is there trouble brewing between one of my favorite couples (M&E)? And now what will the Jewelry do now that their parents are, for all intents and purposes, divorced? Will they cope?

I don't know how you kept track of all these plots, but you did it wonderfully. I actually made a calendar while writing my previous epic (I'm still crossing my fingers on this one!) in order to keep track of days and events. Gotta get going to work...have a great day!

Author Reply: Yes, just a bit of trouble for Merry/Estella. Don't worry, though. I don't let it last *too* long. But I thought it would be a bit unrealistic if there were *no* bumps on the road in their romance.

You may be surprised at how the Jewelry cope. Now that they are out from under Hyacinth's baleful influence and surrounded by nice hobbits, they will have a chance.

I wish I'd thought of that. My handwritten notes are full of little jottings, where I figure out where things go, and I was constantly referring to the photocopy of the Shire calendar I had made. But mostly, I just kept reading back into my previous chapters. I did have an awful lot going on!

It's good to see another Bucklander gaining an important position! When you mentioned that Opal had a visitor, I expected it to be Rosie (after the conversation that passed between her and Sam), but Legolas - that was a surprise. Now you really have stirred my interests.

Author Reply: Yes, well, the idea came to me when I realized that my bridge-tending brothers were also Bankses--they had to be relatives, and since I had plans to bring them in again, why not?

Opal is going to have a *lot* of visitors!

Uhoh indeed. Merry's going to have some explaining to do with Estella. Glad to see Freddy is able to listen to Bergil attempting to play the flute. That's a good sign that he's beginning to move on. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your fic for Marigold's challenge.

Author Reply: Merry is not going to be very happy when he realizes how he upset her.

Freddy is beginning to make a life; it's important that he learn to cope with the reminders.

Thank you. I'm trying hard to get it done in time.

Now this could be interesting. Legolas visiting Opal and then maybe Rose if they allow her to. Looks like everyone is trying to help Opal. I'm so glad. I love Merry and Pippin talk about Merry's need to defend the family. Very good chapter.

Author Reply: I'm hoping to show that difficult and tragic as it may be, this particular tragedy may turn out very much for the best for Opal and her sisters.

Merry does indeed have a need to defend those he loves; and those he defends recognize this.

Estella is not happy! Merry has a lot to do to redeem himself there!

Poor Opal - I'm glad her sisters are sticking by her. Amythest has a good point - with Hyacinth as a mother, they would hardly have been the most popular lasses at Great Smials. I'm glad Legolas has gone to see Opal - and that Rosie wants to visit her.

I think hobbits could probably talk for ever - so the assembly might go on rather. Frodo could expire from boredom before the end.

Author Reply: Yes, Merry will soon find out she is not happy. It will probably make a great deal more of an impression than his father's lecture.

Opal and her sisters have really never had anyone else. Their mother only saw them as something she could use, and their father, unfortunately only saw them as extensions of their mother. He's learning better, now. Opal is going to have a great deal of company.

The assembly is going to go on for a while. I have too many loose ends to tie up, and I can't have it end too soon, or I'll have to round everyone up again. 8-)

I don't think he will quite *expire* of it, but he is definitely finding it tedious.
