This was such a fun story. I so appreciate all the time you put into it -- very enjoyable! :-)

This is one that I have on my e.reader and have spent many a (happy?) hour with It in doctors waiting rooms etc. When I was first reading it e.readers were a scarce commodity and Kindles etc had not been invented! On a couple of occasions you also helped me to introduce someone to the concept of fanfiction. Way before and a lot more wholesome than 'Fifty Shades...'
I especially like the development of lesser known characters in this. Do I start doing a Pippin over certain unfinished epics? *opens eyes wide and flutters lashes*

I've recently found my way back to Tolkien fanfiction again, and have embarked on a re-read of my favourite stories, before I'm going to try to catch up on what I've been missing. I noticed I hadn't left a review for this story of yours, and it's time and past time I remedy this to let you know how much I like this story and thank you for sharing it, seeing as this is I think at least my third time reading it.

One can see that this is still an early work of yours, because it's still a bit rough at the edges, particularly concerning the flow of the narrative, and the jumping of PoVs.

But the most important things are right there: an engaging plot, vivid descriptions that bring the Shire fully to life, and most especially wonderful, wonderful characterisations and interpersonal relationships. And it seems that a part of the reason for the points of criticism I mention above is that you're just so brimming over with invention and character moments of your big cast that they couldn't be contained in an more "streamlined" narrative, which somehow manages to contribute even more to its charme.

When you have a bit of time on your hands, you might want to correct some persistent spelling errors of yours:
- Mundberg -> Mundburg (although IIRC, that happened only once in this story)
- Odovocar -> Odovacar
- Esmerelda -> Esmeralda (not always, but quite a few times)
- Pellenor -> Pelennor
- You also have some places where you call Freddy's mother "Rosemary" instead of "Rosamunda"

Thanks again, Dreamflower! I'm off to the next story; I likely won't comment all that often, but I might pop up from time to time to leave a review.

Author Reply: Thanks for the heads up on the spelling errors--I'll have to see if I can locate them.

The "Esmerelda" was so persistent in early stories because somehow without realizing it I had accidentally programmed the incorrect spelling into the autocorrect on my word processing program at the time! I don't know if I will EVER get all of those out. But I'll keep an eye open for the others!

Also, I doubt if I will ever stick to just one POV in a long story. I am quite fond of multiple POVs. I know the conventional wisdom nowadays is to have one single narrative voice (preferably first person, or a very tight single narrator) but while I can do that, and usually do in shorter pieces, I much prefer to explore all my characters! I also like to experiment with POV, such as showing two or more POVs of the same events. If it's a flaw, it's one I'll have to live with.

I'm so pleased that you re-read my story. That's always a lovely thing for a writer to hear--and especially about an older one like this that *is* a little rough around the edges!

(((hugs))))

And the end of the visit is come, and the goodbyes said, and Frodo begins to know that in the end he will be taken by the sea longing himself.

Author Reply: Yes, the visit is over for those who remain in the Shire. Frodo is still at *this* point in time striving to deny his sea-longing, not yet ready to admit defeat, and at the same time, in his heart he is also beginning to prepare for that last goodbye. He is starting to understand that striving to stay in the Shire may be a losing battle. And at least, to Legolas, he can admit his fears, for Legolas does understand that part of it at least.

This is my favorite stories of this time period! I absolutely loved it. The part at the ball and the part of Sam and Rosie's wedding reminded me of Emma by Jane Austen. I haven't read the book, but I saw the movie, and it's alot like that. Made me laugh, I loved it!
God bless,
Ellie

Author Reply: Why, thank you very much!

I am glad that the ball, and the wedding reminded you of Jane Austen, as I rather envision the Shire gentry as being a somewhat similar society. And the fashions of the ball were definitely influenced by the Regency. I'm so pleased you saw the similarity--not everyone catches that!

I am so glad that you enjoyed it--it remains my own favorite of my longer fics.

Wow! What an amazing story, Dreamflower! Incredibly inticate and intriguing! The change in Opal and her sisters was wonderful to see, and I love your characterization of everyone. The image of Aragorn putting a lizard in Gandalf's hat...LOL! Oh, I'd love to be around for that one! LOL! And poor Bergil, trying to be polite and making himself sick. But for me the highlight of the story was Sam and Rosie's wedding. Oh, I hope when I marry, that my wedding will be that beautiful!

I tend to skip around and go from one author to another, but I find myself often wishing to come back to your work and read more. Your style, characterization, "voices," and the plots themselves are wonderful.
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: I am so glad that you enjoyed this. I had a wonderful time writing it! And I do believe you are the very first person to comment on the little anecdote of Aragorn putting a lizard in Gandalf's hat!

Sam's and Rosie's wedding was, of course, where the story was headed from the start. I am so glad that you liked it--I wanted to make up a wedding with ceremonies and traditions that would feel familiar, and yet be very hobbity and different from what we have in RL. For example, it could not be religious, since JRRT says that hobbits are not--Frodo and his friends after returning would have been an exception after being exposed to the Elves and the Dunedain--but hobbits in general would never have referred to Eru or the Valar. And I think it would have been rather important to have the seven-witnesses-and-red-ink that we are told are dear to hobbits' hearts. And the silver penny in the cake was a tribute to JRRT's story "Smith of Wooton Major" which in spite of not being about hobbits, seems a rather hobbity sort of story.

Thank you so much for your kind words about my writing! *blushes*

I can't tell you enough of what a wonderful, insightful hobbit-world you've created. I've loved every minute of reading this tale, from beginning to end. You created characters using both canon and those of your own beautiful imagination--some I will always remember, some I will gladly forget! LOL...not really. You are the first author I read where you managed to create a disdainful hobbit...which says a lot about your abilities as a writer. And the ending! Making me want more of those wee Little People! Bless you!

You'll see shortly which tale I've begun today. While I prepared for work this morning, I realized that for the first time in many weeks I didn't have a story ready to take with me. I solved that problem real quick. ;-)

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful world of Middle-earth. :-)

Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed "A New Reckoning"! It was delightful to me to see your reviews on a story finished over a year ago; I was able to renew my own love for the story--which remains in my own opinion one of my better efforts. I enjoyed and looked forward to all your reviews, and also to our little side-conversations in email.

Actually, I saw your other review before I saw this one; for some reason I did not get the review alerts for these two chapters--but I knew they had to be here, and came looking, LOL!

And *I* am definitely looking forward to more of "Courtship"

You know, I do love this story and I have to apologize for not reviewing more often. It has been my intention to do so. I have enjoyed every chapter thoroughly and you write very well. I love your hobbits and how you describe them and their lives, every little detail. Please write another looong story about them again :) Perhaps a sequel when Freddy and his gang has come home and Merry and Pippin are married and settled down?

Thank you so much for this wonderful, loving, enjoyable story!

Hugs
Anso

Author Reply: Thanks for the nice review. I have enjoyed all the ones I have had from you. I am planning a sequel, but am getting a few shorter stories out of the way first. I just started posting a pre-Quest story, and Marigold and I are also co-authoring a story we thought up while we evacuated from Hurricane Ivan. But I have been doing some work on the sequel already.
I am so glad that you enjoyed "A New Reckoning".
