A New Reckoning  by Dreamflower 8 Review(s)

Yes the delegation is complete: 6 hobbits, then the 2 hobbit healers, and the 4 prisoners--making 12 hobbits heading out of the Shire at the same time!

Twelve hobbits heading out of the Shire and going to Gondor? Yikes! What would Aunt Dora say, if she were still alive? =)

And one last Hobbit is added to the list going South. Good transition chapter.

Author Reply: Yes, the last one!

Cool! So the delegation is complete. Mosco is going to keep an eye out for his "auntie". Road to Edoras is definitely my next tale...yet I'm drooling over your P&D tale...oy.

The whole build up to the wedding is perfect. Even *I'm* starting to bite my nails! I can hardly wait to read your version of a hobbit wedding. :-)

"Road to Edoras" starts a few days after they leave the Shire, and is ongoing; at the same time, there are four or five short tales: "Marigold's Wedding" and "Tribute" are the important ones. "It Takes a Took" begins about a week or so after Frodo's next birthday...

It was funny, when I was writing it, I was as nervous as if I were planning and preparing a RL wedding, LOL!

That was clever of Pippin. I doubt any of the others would have managed to shut Sam up about the master bedroom issue.

Hobbits being created just for Frodo to go on the Quest? That *is* a scary thought. What will become of them now that the Quest is over and Frodo isn't needed anymore? After thinking about *that* for a while, I prefer not to believe the hobbits-created-just-for-the-Quest theory.

Looking forward to the wedding. (Wonder if Clodio et al. will try something, just out of spite. The men might want to keep an extra eye on them.)

Author Reply: Pippin usually seems to know when to be blunt. I doubt if *that* interpretation of his refusal would have even occurred to Sam, but once Pippin pointed it out to him, he couldn't keep objecting.

I don't believe that Iluvatar would simply cast hobbits aside once they had served their purpose. Just because they had a destiny did not make them any less beloved. In fact, I would venture to guess, just from the way Gandalf feels about them, that hobbits are his favorite creation.

The wedding rapidly approaches.

Oh frabjus day! Calloo callay. Dreamflower is back!

I agree with Gimli, thinking that the hobbits were created for the express purpose of having a Frodo to defeat the darkness *is* a frightening thought. But I do think the thought also has a rightness about it. I can see it as a deliberate part of Eru's Music.

Author Reply: *Blushes* Thank you. It's nice to be missed.

The idea that hobbits in general, and Frodo in particular, were created especially for the Quest, is one that often gets tossed around in discussions of LoTR. I think there is a great deal of justification for that veiw; it is one that JRRT would not have been uncomfortable with as a Christian. And it in no way diminishes Frodo's choices or his free will, as some people would have it. But when you realize the suffering, the burden, and the sorrow, involved in Frodo's sacrifice, it really is scary.

This story just keeps getting better and better...makes me glad I get notified when new chapters come up. So you're planning a sequel, eh? If it's anything like this one has been, count me in for the duration. You've got a wonderful writing style that keeps people hooked and wanting more.

And speaking of plot bunnies...what ELSE is in those mathom-rooms at Bag End, hmm? LOL

Keep up the great work!

Author Reply: Thank you so much for all the compliments! You are going to give me a swelled head!

The sequel is in the planning and percolating stages. I do have a few scenes already set to go, but they need a lot of linking up, 8-D. It may be a while before it begins to get posted, as I have to finish a Marigold challenge, and another couple of plot bunnies are already nibbling at me. Please don't sic any more on me, I'm not sure I could handle it, LOL!

LOL, poor Targon will have to give a full review of the wedding to the King and Queen? ;-) That probably was not on his mind or todo list when he left Gondor. It's just that our modern day men don't note most of those details, I hope he does better.

I do like the admiration that the men, Legolas and Gimli have for most of the hobbits and the way you show it in your story. This will be an interesting group travelling back to Gondor. And it will be a very changed group by the time these hobbits get back to the Shire.

I hope those "miscreants" don't give them too much trouble on the way to Rohan. I think they would be even more cowed once they get outside of the Shire and see what the rest of the world is like. No wonder Legolas wants to protect hobbits in general. That echos the same sentiments that Aragorn has in LOTR about the Rangers watching over the Shire all those years.

Author Reply: I'm sure that the King and Queen will indeed expect a full report of the wedding. But at least Targon won't be the only eye-witness, so perhaps they can get more details out of the hobbits. I don't expect Poppy to take note of many of them, but maybe Viola will do better.

Aside from my fascination with the relationship between the cousins, my other fascination is with the interworkings of the remaining Fellowship. The Three Hunters formed a special bond for the objects of their pursuit; Aragorn could not go to the Shire, but Legolas and Gimli can. Of course, their love for the four Travellers pre-disposed them to think well of other hobbits.

I am beginning to get my ideas together for the trip to Gondor. The story needs a bit more percolating time, but I've got some notions already. You are right in saying that they will be different when they return.

As to the miscreants, well, the journey won't be completely trouble free.

There is something about hobbits that brings out the protectiveness of the larger races. Legolas recognizes this.

I loved this chapter. Pippin surely knew how to keep Sam quiet. Very funny. I am now wondering what is in that box of books, though. I just have a feeling that something important might be there. Hope everything is alright with you and I'm glad to see you posting again on this one.

Author Reply: Oh, there's nothing Pip won't say, if he thinks it will do the trick!

Box of books? Well, it *was* just a box of books, but *now* someone has sicced a plot bunny on me. No fair. But it's going to have to wait for another story.

Things have been hectic for me, with some unexpected tasks at work, and with some family problems, but it looks as though life is going to get back to what passes for normal around here.
